Could someone give me the average weight of an average horn, packed for shipping?

I want to save, myself a trip to UPS, then back home to contact the buyer (for postage) and then back to UPS again. I'm going to use the online UPS site for an estimate of shipping cost.

(And no, I don't have scales at home.)

Thanks

Without a case is how the horn should be packed. Box size and shipping distance now determine price. Example: To Indiana from the Bay Area is about $60, uninsured. Seattle, about $30.
If you pack well , you don't need insurance.

I'm asking what the average shipping weight of a horn and case is.

I do not think that there is an answer to your question.

The last time I shipped a bare trumpet the packaged weight was 5~6 lbs. I have cases that weigh 3 lbs, I have cases that weigh 30 lbs.

So depending on the case, it will be between 5 and 50 lbs.

Gary.

Not exactly an answer to your question, but appropriate for your consideration.

I've always had UPS pack and insure the horn. If you pack it, no matter how well and it gets damaged, UPS can and will say "Not our fault, insufficient packing" and not pay up. If, however, they've packed it, they can't use that excuse.

Yes, it's more expensive, but well worth it.

Again, just my two cents.

Steve

I have shipped a lot of horns with and without cases and mostly via UPS. All of these have been to CONUS, and for all of them, the weight generally does not matter for, say, the normal weight of a Bach in a Bach single case in a fairly normal box for such (under 15 lb.). The price will change with the dimensions, for sure. I use ShipStation.com, and I have played around with changing the weight sometimes on the website with a new order in my account, and the price does not change. I've gone from 5 to 10 to 15 lb., and the price has not changed. If I can cut the size of the box down, then the price always goes down. From your description, 12 lb. is probably pretty close.

Dstpt is correct, weight is irrelevant. It's the size of the box and the distance shipped. The post office has, over the last couple of years, changed to "dimensional shipping," which means size matters.
You can use the Click and Ship tool on the USPS site to get an idea of how much things cost.

I ship horns many times a year. The key is a long (25-27") box, and bubble wrap, peanuts. Most of the ones I ship are just under 4 LBS. With a case its 8-10 LBS. I DO NOT like to ship in cases. Cases are for gigging and car trunks, NOT for shipping. If you must ship in case pack around the horn inside the case so it cannot move. I like to remove the 2nd slide as that is a potential issue with even a slight bump. If you feel confident you can kick the box down some stairs with no damage , you are OK .
Anyone wanting more tips PM me.

I've been shipping horns not only nationally, but internationally. I used to live in Germany, shipping to and from the U.S. for 20 years. And predominantly woodwinds, which are much more finicky than brass. I'm just looking for a ballpark figure to save me multiple trips to UPS/USPS.
