Atlanta will be spoiled for choices when it comes to quality brass repair/restoration.

You've got that right. There's a cavernous abyss in SE Wisconsin now.

I just saw this on his website, which does not even mention the fact that he builds trumpets. Which are superb, btw.

I know the last couple times I went to his shop, he was trying to sell his building as well as his house. He couldn't find a suitable property. I guess he expanded his search? Seriously though, I wonder if he just happened across a place he wanted, or if he specifically targeted Atlanta? Seems like there will be some culture shock.

He won't be shovelling snow!

That was the reason for the move down south, he said.

I'm not sure whether I should be happy or glad that he didn't pick Texas instead of Georgia.

I probably would be spending a lot more money with him had he gone that route.

Seriously through, fantastic craftsman. And his lacquer work is second to none.

Edit-

Did not mean to imply there was any competition between Melk and Josh Landress, just got a bit too enthusiastic when we're on the subject on brass techs.

Pardon? Mr. Melk does great work, as does Mr. Landress (from what I understand). I wasn't aware that there was some type of competition.

Let's keep it that way.

I am a comeback player - just starting again after many decades. I used to go to Melk Music when it was near the fair grounds and just assumed I would seek out the current Melk establishment when I needed work done on my horns again. I am so sorry to hear that there will no longer be a Melk presence in Milwaukee!

Any other suggestions for local brass work?

-Mike

Melk Music has been in business the whole time. Charlie broke off on his own, delivering MUCH higher quality. Melk Music moved sw, on Janesville Rd I think, and sometimes has a really cool collection of great trumpets.

Thanks. Good to know there is still a reasonable place for instrument repair beyond Cascio and the Brass Bell! I doubt I ever need the level of expertise provided by Charlie...

I haven't found another local location just yet. For now, I'll be having work done at Dr. Valve (Chicago area).

I just found out I live 25 minutes from Mr. Melk. I've got a G C Conn 40B Vocobell I "inherited" that I'm going to take to him. Should be a first class instrument once I get it back from him.

I can't believe my luck.

I just had Charlie do an overhaul on my New York Bach and he did an excellent job. I would recommend him to anyone.

What does an overhaul generally run (ballpark)?
