I've been playing trombone and baritone for a REALLY long time, and for
most of that time, I have gone back and forth between 3 of the most
popular Bach mouthpieces. Recently, I purchased a Denis Wick Heritage
12CS. WOW!!! What a difference. I'm getting better tone, better control,
and this mouthpiece is really easy to blow through, especially in the
higher ranges that are sometime required in genres such as jazz. I realize that
the instrument that the mouthpiece is attached to makes a difference,
but in general, on trumpet, I'm using a Bach 3C. I'm an older guy now, and
I don't have the wind that I used to. I was wondering if there was
a mouthpiece, in the dizzying array of mouthpieces available for trumpet,
that might give me the same kind of significant change that the Denis
Wick gave me on trombone and baritone.

Why not a Dennis Wick Heritage (trumpet) 3C?

Hello!

To be honest, trumpet requires far less air than the low brass instruments that you've played for a long time. In my opinion a 3C is not an extreme mouthpiece in any way, especially for a player that is accustomed to larger, low brass pieces. You may find something that you like better than what you've been using, but I don't believe it will help you feel like you "have more air" or anything like that.

Best of luck!

Dave

What trumpet make and model are you using? That could be a major contributor to the overall feel.

kind of embarrassing ... being on a fixed income, I had trouble pulling the trigger right now on a trumpet ... I just wanted to start playing, and I've had good luck with other instruments by going the cheap route on ebay ... not even sure that I remember the make and model, but I think this probably answers your question

the Denis Wick is really popular in trombone circles, but I didn't see it come up very frequently when it came to trumpet, so I was naturally hesitant ... I noticed that Denis Wick has a number of different mouthpieces available in
the Heritage format, and I was having trouble deciding on which one ... I appreciate the input ... this is a great forum

Dennis Wicks are standard BBB cornet mouthpieces and used on trumpet too. And the Heritage model trumpet mouthpiece is right on their web page. Easy to find.

The reason I suggest that model is because it's the closest to what you are playing on the big horn as well as a comparative size on trumpet. In your position, I think the best thing is to start out conservatively.

Given the vast range of mouthpieces available, there are almost certainly ones that would be a better match, possibly much better. The challenge is in knowing what changes would be helpful: Rim size, contour, throat, backbore, etc. Figuring that out without expensive trial and error may require some help.

Reach out to a reputable mouthpiece maker like Pickett, Hammond, Stork, Reeves...and ask for their advice. They'll ask you questions to help you narrow down the options to a few in their lineup.

Mouthpiece Express allows you to return mouthpieces, so they are a good option if you prefer the trial and error approach.

What were the three "popular" Bach trombone mouthpieces you played? There are a number of us on this forum who also play trombone and this information might be helpful.

You need less wind to play trumpet. Can you be more specific about what you're looking for? A 3C diameter that is easier in the upper register?

If so, I'd try a ACB TA2 on an MO backbores. Really great 3ish combo which makes the upper register sing

Well, your list didn't inspire a stroke of genius.

As has been stated before, we're all different. All I can offer is this: My mouthpieces on both trombone and trumpet have changed as I've hit my late 50s. I used to play a Bach 6.75C on trombone -- now I play a CKB-era (Conn/King/Benge) King 12C for high/bright stuff and an old King M21 for jazz soloing. I used to play Reeves 43 rims on trumpet (close to a Bach 3C diameter) -- now I play Curry mouthpieces around the diameter of a Bach 5C. For me, things have gotten a bit smaller.

Good luck in your quest.

I can’t recommend a specific size, but I’d check out Austin Custom Brass for mouthpieces. I’ve tried a few of them and they feel great.

I usually stick with Bach mouthpieces, but I don’t see myself going back to Bach after trying ABC.
