Hey folks,

Greetings from the UK! I’ve got the Arban’s Platinum method, and Merri Franquin Complete Method for Modern Trumpet. I realise myself certainly, even though my own playing standards are mediocre at best, that the Arban’s in its numerous incarnations is probably THE established trumpet method …. However, I’m just wondering if any of you more knowledgeable trumpeters out there, if you’ve explored the Franquin method, is there any aspect in which you feel it’s a superior method to the Arban? I’ve dipped in and out of both and feel that I need a second, or even third opinion on which to concentrate on for a spell?

Kind regards,

For working on foundational skills, it is hard to beat Arban, particularly if you are doing so on your own. Franquin offers challenges that build on what you'll find in Arban, including increased range.

The choice of instructional material depends on what you want (or need) to learn. Some books provide good exercises, etudes, etc. that can be used as practice material to improve existing skills, but might not be helpful to teach how to do the basic technique.

An important question is 'what is the problem(s) that I need to resolve'.

You can read this phrase on TH a thousand times - get a good teacher.

Mine gives me exercises / etudes / drills which build up my deficient areas.

It might not always be oblivious to a new player WHY you are doing a particular drill, but a good teacher creates the best method for YOU.

^^^^^^

If you have no good teacher (and you should), get Eric Bolvin's Arban Manual. It arranges the Arban exercises in a logical order.

Personally, I like the series by Harold Mitchell. No hunting and seeking around hundreds of pages. It offers three graded books with balanced exercises in each lesson.

I notice you are in Scotland, so my links are to qPress which offers digital downloads, which should save you postage and customs.

An aside you might get a knowing laugh out of: One night in Scotland, I was in a pub that was closing and asked directions to another that might still be open. I talked to three different people and couldn't understand none of them. Finally, the bar maid took me outside, turned my body facing down the street, and gave me a push, LOL. (Americans )

Agree, Harold Mitchell's books are brilliant as a progressive method.

No matter what method you work from there are certain fundamentals that you need to work on - tone quality, intonation, control of attacks and releases, you need to be able to function in various keys and learn skills, develop flexibility and other skills like interval work, articulation, range etc.

There's nothing wrong with Arban's - if there's another method that gets you working on the same skills that's fine. You need a decent teacher to guide you, hopefully one who's knowledgeable in getting you past problems you might encounter.

I've started using it for a couple months now as a developing comeback player, and I've found it very helpful in structuring my play.
