Easter Sunday of 2021, I had a Stroke at 3AM in the morning. Not knowing exactly what had happened, I tried to "sleep it off" all day Sunday as I had a terrible headache (and I never get headaches). My Wife returned from Church and insisted that we use WebMD who stated that I should go to the Emergency Room asap. From there I ended up at The University of Cincinnati Neurological Intensive Care Unit. One week there and two days at Rehab and I was back home for a month in bed recuperating.

For a year, I had little to no motivation to do anything. I quit play trumpet and quit working out in my basement gym.

Three weeks ago I started playing again out of "A Tribute to the Teaching of Bill Adam" and I have now regained everything. At 60 YOA, I can still play four octaves without any loss of power etc. Still, I haven't played any Gig in probably 25 years. I just "practice" while watching television.

On another note: my website will be going away in another month so if you want to copy anything from it you had better do it now.

Good on ye. It's great that your recovery has been so thorough and successful.

I have had two major strokes and at least three lesser ones and still haven't completely recovered. Left hand/arm is weak and right hand not well coordinated.

Was a professional woodwind player. That's out of the question. Love the French horn. Can't play that, either. So, it's trumpet.

Still, I practice most days because that's what I do.

*As an afterthought, perhaps I should qualify this. I played trumpet in school from 7th grade through college (UNT), the service and big bands/combos. French horn one year in college (UH) and two years in the service. WW after that.

Wondered why you had not posted anything in a while. Glad you're on the road to recovery.
Check Nick Drozdoff's website. He also had a stroke and wrote about it in his blog.
It's not uncommon for stroke victims to not realize they've had one. Very good friend of mine had one in 2012. He was a chiropractic physician and was all set to get in the car and drive to the office. His wife noticed something wasn't right. Their oldest son is an osteopathic medical doctor. She called him and it took maybe 10 seconds for him to know what happened. Dad, you had a stroke, get your ass to the emergency room. He made a near complete recovery. He told me he had no idea what had happened.
There were some hereditary heart issues that ran in his family, and he passed unexpectedly in 2018 from a heart attack.
Best wishes. Stay vigilant and stay safe.

Russell and K; Kudos to you both. A stroke, and a heart attach, are two of the most concerning things some of us seniors face going forward.

I remember years ago reading an article by a man that realized he was having a heart attach, and he detailed exactly how he survived it. Only at the end of the article did he disclose he was a medical doctor - specializing in heart conditions. It was a fascinating article.

But, as usual, I digress. That both of you have the patience and put the work in is exemplary. I've enjoyed both of your contributions to TH for many years. Russell, I'm sorry your website is going away! There's a wealth of info there and although there are always a few complainers around (complaing about any and everything), I've found your site to be very beneficial.

Again, kudos to both of you. Have a Happy 4th this year - and hopefully many more to come!

My stroke was a Cerebellar Stroke so other than vomiting until I was dry heaving, the only thing I felt was a terrible headache and a complete loss of balance. I could not walk ten feet so I crawled to the toilet at 3AM while my Wife called 911. I had two more similar episodes in April 2021 and did visit the University of Cincinnati Neurological Intensive Care Unit a second time; however, was only there over night that time.

My type II Diabetes is what they figure caused the stroke; plus, according to them, I have a main artery blocked going to my Brain. I feel fine now, just had no motivation to do anything for a while which I had read is common with Stroke Victims. LIFE IS SHORT !

Yeah, the website makes no money and in my experience ... the re-up for web hosting is usually at least triple the initial cost. Thank you for the kind words.

I am glad for you, Mr. Dixon. Glad that you recovered, and glad that you have gotten back into playing. Happy 4th!

Glad you recovered Mr. Dixon! Have you thought about maybe starting a YouTube channel since you'll no longer have a website?

Thought about it to attempt to muster up some teaching lessons where I live.

Thank you all for the well wishes. My recovery was so quick that the Specialist in the ICU were astounded and the Physical Therapy lasted two days and they stated, "you don't belong here ... go home."

I recently had a stroke, and I’m so glad to say that I’m back! It has been a long and difficult journey, but I’m so grateful to all of the doctors, nurses, and therapists who helped me get back on my feet. It was a very scary experience, but I’m happy that I was able to recover. I’m still in recovery, and I’m doing my best to stay positive and focus on getting stronger every day. I’m so thankful for all of the support I’ve received from family and friends, and I’m thrilled to be back!

I had a minor stroke, 3 weeks ago, I seem to be back to normal, thankfully. Nobody can tell me if it’s safe to go back to playing again. So I’m not sure what to do.

Russel D - glad that you made it back to your horn!!!
Must have been a genuinely terrible experience getting a stroke in the middle of the night - brrrr!

Reading your post I was struck by your words "For a year, I had little to no motivation to do anything. I quit play trumpet and quit working out in my basement gym.".

A screeching halt to life as you knew it! Life put on low jets.

What made you saddle up again?

Also - kehaulani and others made the same trip. So what is it that makes playing worth again???

Personally I´ve had a severe bout of Urinary Tract Infections complicated by stones during 5 months - of course miles far from your serious ailments. But I had no energy practicing because of the pain however missing this, and the cancelled gigs.

How about you? Did you miss playing or/and what?
