Happy birthday Gustav! Born 155 years ago today, July 7, 1860 - May 18, 1911.

Go listen to some Mahler today in celebration.

(and it is Doc Severinsen's birthday, too)

Quite true! Nothing gets by you ...

Nothing wrong with celebrating the day of his birth. I'm pushing for a federal holiday like Washington, Lincoln, King, &c.

I thought Mahler was dead.

(It's deja vu all over again! BTW, Yogi Berra's birthday was on May 12th.)

The back half of Mahler's symphonies, 5 through 10, are in my humble opinion the absolute high-water mark for symphonic music. Each one is utter perfection.

All I know is, if I were producing a Mahler biopic, I'd cast Christopher Walken to play him (on looks alone).

A few weeks I saw my first performance of Mahler. It was his 4th being done by the Pacific Symphony in Southern California. It was awesome.

I think the 4th was the first one that I saw performed live, 40 years ago. A great way to start!

Check out the Fritz Reiner/Chicago Symphony Living Stereo recording from 1958. The 2nd movement sounds like a horn concerto practically with how hot the horn is mic'ed. It is Philip Farkas on horn so it sounds fantastic!

I think it was Kaylet Torrez of the Pacific Symphony that was doing all the heavy lifting.
