Hi,

I have been working out of Harold Mitchells book 1 and was wondering if someone can suggest some easy Jazz etudes. I have also been playing from the real book.

Not necessarily "easy," but a couple of books I've enjoyed recently:

Technical Drills and Duets for the Jazz/ Commercial Trumpet Player, by Randall Reyman (I got my copy from Amazon)
This book is built around a set of daily drills which take you through useful scales and patterns in all the keys, with a recommendation that you work on one key each week, and supplemented by a set of duets (which can of course be played as etudes)

Staccato Standards, Books 1 and 2", by Eric Veldkamp (available through qpress.ca)

These 2 books have a set of 60 etudes based on the chord changes of favorite jazz standards, such as Autumn Leaves, Come Sunday, Take the A Train, Joy Spring, Donna Lee, etc. While Erik calls them "Staccato Studies," you can benefit by working through them with various articulations, including slurring.

By the way, if you aren't familiar with it, check out qpress.ca for all sorts of trumpet method books, jazz, classical and others. They have transcriptions of many of the best-known jazz artist solos, for example. All of their books can be ordered in hard copy, or immediate .pdf download, or both.

I can never fund the search function ob that, which is very frustrating. Do you have any tips? Thanks

On my browser (usually Safari) I just go to the home page and click "Shop Now." Then a page comes up with search terms in the left-hand column. You can search by author/ artist/ composer, keyword, book type, publisher, etc.

Got your message but something is wrong with the trumpet herald website; my messages don't look like they are going through, instead, they are stuck in Outbox purgatory. Please send me your email address via private message and I'll send you the jazz etudes I wrote.
Thanks!

Rich Willey's stuff is great...including the duet books. Jim Snidero's "Easy Jazz Conception" and "Jazz Conception" and a more recent blues book are outstanding. I have a book published by Jamey Aebersold called "20 Authentic Bebop Solos" that is pretty good as well. Aebersold also has a book of Lennie Niehaus etudes that is coordinated with Jamey's volume 54. "Maiden Voyage Jazz Solos" that includes a recording of Bobby Shew playing them.
