*Are there any non-lead players playing Jet Tomes? (Al Hirt notwithstanding.)
*Who are they?

I don't know, Tony. In this context, I would put him into more of the "lead" category. That's as contrasted to a combo-oriented Jazz player.

I seem to remember the Jet-Tone brochure had Clark Terry and Bobby Hackett using their mouthpieces.

Thanks. I guess mainly nigh-note but adaptable. I wonder which model would be most adaptable to combo jazz playing, Symphony model?

You might take a look at the Patrick mouthpiece site. Many of his pieces are based on JetTone designs.

I 2nd this Motion ... Steve makes really great mouthpieces. I own an old "LOUD" piece and a 12.C Patrick piece.

None of the current Jet-Tone pieces are TRUE (Ratzenberger) Jet-Tones. Some, not even close to the original.

It'd be a good guess that none or the jazz players who endorsed JetTone 50 years ago were using those pieces to get a warm, smokey sound. More likely, they appreciated the improved endurance and relatively quick responsiveness of the pieces.

But, as mentioned, if you're interested in the JetTone world, work with Steve Patrick.

No, I know of other sources like Legend etc. Just curious who played them, that's all.

Why do so many people think Ratzenberger made Jet-Tones are the true versions? Ray Amado developed the original concept and Bill Ratzenberger was his business partner until Ray caught him stealing from the till. Ray packed up and left Ratzenberger to carry on. Bill Ratzenberger owned a night club in Bridgeport, Conn. and didn't have the skill to screw a burr on a bolt and the "original" Jet-Tones produced by him after Amado left were never good or consistent. They got worse when the business changed hands many times over the years. I know the Legends are quite accurate as I gave them the original Ray Amado made pieces to copy.

Thanks for the clarification, Tony. When did Ray Amado leave the business?

I bought my four pieces, at the same time and with the same rim, in 1970 without knowing anything about the Jet-Tone business structure or any names associated with it. I picked up the Ratzenberger tag from the internet, many years later (sometime in the ‘90s or early 2000s), when I was trying to get a backup piece before having a mod made on the original. I hate that I echoed a misinformed internet myth.

The “identical” model, at that time from Jet-Tone, wasn’t close, in interior dimensions, to my piece, but, I tried again when they advertised subsequent models as exact copies of the originals. Not close, again.

Some time in the late 80's or early 90's I purchased some Jet-tones. I think they were size "7" somethings and a DS. The "7"s ID felt similar to a Bach 10 1/2 C while the DS felt like perhaps a Bach 8C and the Symphony - perhaps in the Bach 5C range.

A little later, Woodwind & Brasswind acquired the rights to the name and sold the mouthpieces. I'm not sure who actually made them (Kanstul?). I ordered some more mouthpieces. The "7" size was now about like a Bach 6C or 7C, the Symphony model felt like a Bach 1 1/2 C.

I see that WWBW is now selling 8 Jet-Tone models again - specifically under the Jet-Tone name and logo. I wonder what size they are? I might try the Symphony C again - liked the rim shape.

The current models WW&BW are selling are made by Schilke.

Pretty sure Don Ellis played the Roy Stevens Model for a time, and they were made by Jet Tone. I know Don had studied with Roy. I had one and gave it away to a former student. Cleaning out a closet recently, I recently found the flugelhorn mp that was a Roy Stevens model.

My mother had a cousin in Bridgeport who was a good trumpeter. He had a few Jet Tones that he bought from Ratzenberger in the early 70's. He liked them.

I don’t see Charley Shavers or Ernie Royal mentioned yet as Jet-Tone jazz artists. Add them in.
