Does anyone know who made Bush Mouthpieces?
Irving himself? Carroll Purviance "ghosting" them? Anyone else? Thanks.

p.s. I don't mean who makes them today.

I read that the originals may have been made by Bob Reeves. No documentation to back that up though.

I've sent a msg to Mike Thomas (of "Roche-Thomas" & Burbank Trumpets).

Will let y'all know what he says.

Just had a nice conversation with Mike.

Bush mpcs were introduced in 1959. Only two people have made them.

It started with Larry Frank. Larry worked at the Benge factory at 1122 W. Burbank Ave, Burbank CA. Irving Bush went to Larry who then made the Bush mpcs in his brother's shop, which was very near the Burbank factory.

Larry made them until 1985 when Jim New took over, making them at the Kanstul factory, first in Fullerton, CA then in Anaheim.

Jim left Kanstul and went on his own...I think 2001-ish. He was in SoCal for a while and now he's in Hurricane, UT., making mouthpieces for several brands.

Although I never researched this by going through old “Overture”s (the monthly member publication of Local 47 AFM, Los Angeles), supposedly, in the 1960s, Irv Bush purchased an ad for the mouthpieces that simply read “Put Your Lips on a Bush.”

Is there an easy way to tell whether you have one of the originals versus one of the James New ones...?

I tossed this question to Mike. Below is his reply but basically no, there is no real way. Outside shape & design, font, etc. are the same.

“Nope. If the inside of rim is worn down (rolled over) it's a Frank. That's because Frank didn't keep his tooling up and true.”
