I am a comeback player trying to increase my literature library of etudes. What are your favorites for advanced players on the comeback trail? _________________ Chuck

Charlier will keep you busy. Note that there are two books available, a collection of 36 (most popular) and another of 32 (less well-known). _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

Walter Smith Top Tones.
Honestly, some of the Wurm stuff is fun.
Absolutely anything in the Arban and Clarke books when taken seriously. _________________ "To have have fun, to learn, to improve. Charlier is my favorite. Bitsch are very, very difficult. Too modern for me, but if you want to go pro...you gotta learn it. _________________ Please join me as well at:

Sorry, I just read that you're a comeback player picking up the horn again.
I recommend the following to develop musicality, phrasing & rhythm:
Concone Vocalises
Bordogni Vocalises
Brandt Etudes _________________ Please join me as well at:

Check out some of the less well-known Hering etudes, such as 28 Melodious and Technical Etudes, Etudes in the Major and Minor Keys, and 24 Advanced Etudes.
The St. Jacome method has some excellent etudes in it as well: Collinet's 18 Preludes, St. Jacome's 12 Artistic Studies and 12 Characteristic Studies, and Bousquet's 36 Studies.
As for more contemporary material, check out Phil Collins, Nathan Ost, Phil Snedecor....
For really challenging material, look to Vizzutti's Advanced Etudes, Charlier's 32 and 36 etudes, Bitsch, Smith's Top Tones, and Mel Broiles' Studies and Duets I-III. |

This Charlier Edition makes the 36 Studies into a method using Charlier's notations on supplemental studies to go with each etude. It is a game changer. _________________ Check out qPress for the largest selection of trumpet books on the internet. |

During the shutdown of 2020 Jim Wilt recorded hundreds of etudes from many sources. There’s enough in there to keep most of us busy for the rest of our playing days.

Ill second the Wurm etudes, 40 and 20. Bousquet 36 studies are also very good with a wide range of difficulty levels between them. _________________ Dr. Nathan Sobieralski
