For any of our fellow TH members out there who might be interested, there is an Olds Recording trumpet for sale in decent condition for only $699 (+ $40 shipping) at a Music Go Round store in Burnsville, MN. That seems like a pretty good price to me. The link to it is:

https://www.musicgoround.com/product/40116-S000116087/used-olds-recording-trumpets

I just recently acquired for myself a 1947 Olds Super trumpet to add to my "toolbox" (on its way to me now, actually), so I'm not in the market for a Recording, but if I were, I would probably look into this one quite seriously.

Look carefully at the photos. Some nasty repair work was done on the horn. It wasn't well taken care of.

Yeah that horn looks rough as toast. Maybe I'd take a punt for 400 . No serial/age either.

Still, getting it might be an economical way for a player with more limited funds (like myself) to get into one of the finest horns Olds ever made, and then still have money in their budget to get it refurbished (replace all felt pads, corks, springs, etc.), have the less-than-perfect solder repair(s) redone properly, and maybe even remove the main dents in its bell. I wouldn't think all that would cost more than perhaps another $150, to $200, and then you have a pretty decent-looking, high-end Olds horn for less than what most Recordings sell for.

Its year of manufacture (the S/N would indicate app. 1964 or 65, according to Robb Stewart's S/N's list at his website) also is from the still "good" years of Olds' quality control and workmanship/craftsmanship, so it should probably be a fine-playing horn, once it is all repaired and fixed up.

You have to scroll through all the pics to get to the S/N on its valve block.
It is there, you just have to look almost all the way through to find it. .

Oh yeah the site is jank and makes it look like there's only a small handful of pics.

I've played better condition recordings I wouldn't own. ymmv.

I have a 62 Studio with a recording trigger which looks like nothing and plays amazing, and a 46 Super that looks and plays amazingly. I've no concerns about looks, but to blindly buy and assume you can fix it is a fools errand... unless showcase condition and/or desirable era the money has gotta be real low to warrant the chance you buy a total lemon. Yeah, I'll own a recording some day, but I don't think I would touch this for more than 200 delivered.... that's the risk I'm willing to assume for that horn, and it's an insulting amount, but it is also my money

Like I say; a recording badge doesn't mean it's gonna play like Maurice Murphy's horn... these horns can go through so much trauma in their lives that even built well they will never play as they used to.

I guess I'm just saying: YMMV. There's deals to be had, and this isn't cheap enough to be one, IMO.

Best,
Mike

I agree with Bach Again. That horn would cost well over $200 to repair, if it is even worth repairing. If the horn was not taken care off, meaning dropped or knocked around, chances are it won't play well. That is the assumption I would make. You would save money and get a better horn (most likely) if you were to buy a Recording in good condition. Better if it hasn't been overhauled.

I have my eye on a Super, but wondering how the Recording sounds?
Those dents look pretty heavy...even if taken out will this affect playability?
Thanks,
Andy

The Music Go Round location's ad says, I believe, that the horn has been gone over and tested by them, and that it operates and plays fine. I believe that would considered a warranty of sorts as to its functionality and playability. Why don't you at least message them and ask them if it is returnable, if you find it doesn't operate/play as they stated? You might also make them an offer of $600, or even $550, and see if they wil take it.

Just fixing the knuckle into the 3rd valve could cost more than $200. The existing repair is not pretty, and it was probably done that way because of how much it would cost to do it properly.

And because Anderson has stopped doing valve work (the one person that could do it retired) buying an old horn is a crap-shoot.

Just my opinion,
Gary.

Larry, the consensus seems to be that this horn may not be financially worth the risk. You are certainly entitled to your own opinion about the horn, but encouraging others to make offers is going a bit far. If I make an offer based on your advice and then the horn has leaky valves, are you going to step in and help resolve the situation?

You pointed out what you thought was a good deal for someone else. Why not let it go at that? If you are not in a position to buy, then let it go.

No, I certainly couldn't do that. I was only voicing my opinion, and, of course, YMMV. I certainly could be wrong about fixing this horn, and the rest of you probably do know better than me in regards to buying and fixing it up. I was simply trying to help alert all of you about what might be (but probably ISN'T, now that I have heard everyone else's thoughts) a bit of a bargain on a fixer-upper horn. So sorry.

I did find on Ebay another Recording trumpet being offered which looks to be in much better condition, which link I just posted about a few minutes ago.
