All original 1940's Strad with a few patches on the horn. There is already a patch on the 2nd slide crook. Another pinhole developed away from the original patch. Is it better to add a second patch to keep the horn all original or replace the crook?

Well, I guess the real question is if you are a collector or not and if you intend to sell it or not.

If you're going to keep it, for me, it would be just a rhetorical question. and I would get a new slide replacement but one built like the original.

If you intend to resell it to finicky, high-end collectors then I defer to them. They are in a niche I have no interest in and they would look at it completely differently.

Good advice, but I would like to add that this isn’t an either/or situation.

Get a copy made. And keep the original in case you ever decide to sell it.

Get a new slide and keep the old one in case you ever decide to sell it.

I have a 1947 Strad that had a similar issue with the 2nd valve crook. Charlie Melk fixed it for me. He can make you a new 2nd slide.

I actually found a set of matching sleeves/ferrules in Nickel-Silver and will make a duplicate slide so that the horn has playable durability and when/if the owner sells it, it will also come with the original slide.
Thanks everyone for your guidance.

The answer depends on the condition of the metal. If there are spots all over the crook, indicating rot, I'd replace it. It won't lower value at all and will give the new owner, (or you) a second chance.
