I'm surprised no one mentioned the Schilke B-bell models, the very thin, all copper "beryllium" bells.
Lighter in weight than their yellow brass bells and much easier to color, too. |

Several have already mentioned the B5, which has a "B" beryllium bell, right?
But personally I'd steer clear of a "B" Schilke unless you're into bright sounding horns. If you really want a Schilke, I'd instead be looking at an S-HD class or an HC2; neither has the classic Schilke "B" shrill sound. Another horn to consider, not yet mentioned, is the Bach LT190L1B Stradivarius.
Too bad the Wild Thing is no longer an option. It's the most flexible horn I've ever owned. _________________ Bill Blackwell

Nope -- regular weight copper bell.
If you look at the Schilke website, it shows that the B5b has the beryllium bell. |

The XL bore version I played was noticeably darker and looser. I felt it was more of a soloist's instrument. The L bore felt like a lead player's horn. |
I'd second the Shires. I've got a standard Model B, and even though it's not particularly lightweight, it's very agile, and doesn't play like some of the heavier horns I've had in the past - it's very very responsive.
As for Schilkes, I think they are amazing trumpets, but you have to bear in the mind the wrap - it's different than most other trumpets, so where trumpets made on the traditional wrap with the traditional lengths will all have similar intonation characteristics, sometimes playing a Schilke in a section full of Bachs will produce some interesting intonation situations.
Overall Schilkes are much more in tune once you're used to them - about the only note that was noticeably out on the Schilke B6 I played for close to 10 years was the low E, which tended to be a bit high. Even my low D and C# weren't that bad - they barely needed much adjustment. _________________ Patrick Gleason

Hello all,
Schilke B2, B3 or S33HD. Bright, more open and centered and slightly tighter slots...in that order. _________________ Christian K. Peters
