A new found respect for you all

Played tenor sax for 10 years, playing in my church. Also have done “hobby” gigs, nothing professional. For the last almost 4 months I’ve been trying a new instrument, the Bb trumpet.

Wow. I tip my hat off to you brass players. Although I’m improving, for me, it’s more challenging than the sax ever was. So much depends on the player. But in that way it’s uniquely pretty cool. Challenging as it is, I am thoroughly enjoying this journey.

Thanks to you all, for the many things I’ve already learned from this forum.

And kudos for trying a new path in your musical life!
Over here, jokingly we sometimes say that "sax? - playing a sax you can do until you starve to death" whereas trumpetplayers are the likes of Seals. Heroes of art.
Really derogatory in my opinion.
I´ve tried to play sax - oh my the myriad of buttons levers and what not. To that trying to put your top teeth through your upper lip....

Trumpet playing is something completely different!
Mind you - get yourself a teacher, IRL or by Skype. Learn the basic tricks of the trade - if you are serious in this choice of yours!
Experimenting on one´s own does not pave the way ahead!
But keep the joy

That’s quite nice of you to say. And while I’ll admit there are some playing challenges unique to brass playing (or even specific to trumpet) that other instrumentalists cannot grasp, I’m pretty sure that applies to any instrument. Personally, I marvel at the dexterity of the woodwind players where I can’t even keep track of all the various buttons…

Anywho’s, welcome to the trumpet. I’m wishing you’ll have as much fun playing it as the rest of us do.

Thanks for the welcome, tips and encouragement. Funny side note: In the beginning, while reading some of the posts, I didn't know what everyone meant by "slots"! Now, it makes perfect sense!

Ref. Tenor Sax, Dave Liebman opens his book by saying, "Sax is the easiest instrument to learn to play . . badly."
