I’ve contributed in the past to various ways to transpose, citing my own preference for the “Orchestra Trumpeter” by Richard Stegmann. No surprise really as that was the book my tutor at college used to teach me. Some people chimed into the discussion advocating transposing by clef, a method used by Vacchiano in particular. Only this week have I come across a book that teaches this method by the erstwhile principal trumpet of the Royal Opera House in London , Bruno Mancini, written in 1927. Not only treble and bass clefs are used but also mezzo soprano and baritone clefs. I knew these things existed of course but never actually met anyone who used them. Is there anyone out there who still teaches this way? I’m not for a moment suggesting that one way is better than another- if you get the right result, a bit like using a bus or a train, frankly who cares how you get there. Interesting to see it in print though.

Great stuff.

Is there a page that has all of your great brass/trumpet resources? The one from your www.wwjdo.com that goes to http://uhaweb.hartford.edu/LICHTMANN/ hasn't loaded for me when I click on for the last while....

What is the title of this book? I've been looking for Mezzo Soprano and Baritone Clef studies and have come up short.

The book is “The Art of Transposing” - a scientific and simple method for trumpet by G. Bruno Mancini, published by Rudall Carte and Co. (1927)
On the inside cover it has an advertisement for The Webster Patent Conical Bore Piston Trumpet with the accompanying eulogy “ A trumpet perfectly in tune , exceptionally free, very fine tone, and without the faults of the ordinary model trumpets”.
Got to get me one of those...

The reason that my site was taken down has to do with the University of Hartford discontinuing the http://uhaweb.hartford.edu/ server and switching over to: https://www.hartford.edu/

Also, I stopped teaching at the University In the Spring of 2015. Frankly, since I no longer had anything to do with the University, I was surprised that my site was still up and running as long as it was.

I have been fully retired since the Fall of 2016. I don't even own a mouthpiece anymore!

This site had posted a lot of my old stuff:
