Does anybody have a version of Quiet City that is their favorite? I found one by Alison Balsom which I really like.

I really like Phil Smith’s version with the N.Y. Phil.
It’s on Copland Symphony No. 3 conducted by Bernstein (Deutsche Grammophon).

Philip Collins with the Cincinnati Symphony. It’s on an all Copland album with Erich Kunzel conducting. Telarc label I think.

Also like the Phil Smith recording mentioned above.

So many great recordings out there. Along with the NY version, my other favorite is Scott Moore playing with the Nashville Chamber Orchestra on the Naxos label.

Orpheus Chamber Orchestra with Ray Mase.

Buffalo Philharmonic. Can't recall the soloist.

Unfortunately, in the Allison Balsom version, the string orchestra isn't great.

I'd really like to hear the Phil Collins version. I remember Mr. Clean posting an exceptional recording some years back.

Check out a rendition of Christopher Brellochs’ arrangement. It’s more like the original incidental music that Copland wrote for a play.

Jouko Harjanne and Phil Smith.

I haven't heard the Colins one.

Another addition - I quite like Tim Morrison's on the 'Music for the Stage and Screen" album with Boston Pops.

Tim Morrison - Quiet City

Another favorite is Maurice Murphy with LSO, on a Copland and Barber album with MTT. It's not on streaming services, but it pops up on Youtube from time to time. Such incredible color in his sound.

Maurice Murphy - Quiet City

You can also find a live recording of Murphy playing it. Poor audio definition, but wonderful playing.

There's also a fabulous live recording of Tom Rolfs playing this at Tanglewood a few years ago, it's floating around out there.

This is with a semipro orchestra. I was actually placed in the balcony, so the balance at the microphone is a little wonky. I’d probably make some different choices, too. It’s a bit hurried and the pitch is not great.

Thanks, I enjoyed it. May I ask what trumpet you used? I have seen that it’s quite common to use an Eb on this piece.

It's wonderfully musical and beautifully played. Thanks for sharing again.
