Yep. I'd say after 30 days he's pretty much got it nailed.

If I hadn't seen it, I wouldn't believe it. Quite amazing.

That's the result one gets from a solid practice schedule and dedication.
He obviously went for range instead of working on producing a good sound, which in my opinion could result in some very bad habits.
He also needs to work on more technique and moving a good supply of air.
I am not easily impressed by posts like this, but he did dedicate himself to working an hour a day and has made good progress. I tip my hat to him.
If more folks on this site actually practiced like he did, they would find their playing is improving.

Actually, this is the approach I've begun using lately. After multiple strokes my comeback has been challenging. My playing has been a variety of exercises and, I guess because I have a good-professional discipline, I've been able to keep it up for years. But I've gotten bored to tears.
So I started thinking about what I used to do, the first time, as a developing trumpet player and guess what? Tunes. It was a good (but not lengthy) warm-up, a couple of technical exercises and . . . tunes. Better incentive than playing Schlossberg for the millionth time. Tunes. After al, what's it all about? _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Tunes for sure. That's why I do 12 to 15 of them daily every afternoon.

I did a show (Drowsy Chaperone) recently and the guy on first chair had noticeably upped his high-note game. When I asked about it I thought for sure he'd say Clarke and Irons. Turns out he had been practicing a good deal more, but mostly playing tunes. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

It is, of course, very important to learn tunes. It is also important to learn technique.
Herseth said melodic playing is very important. Always strive for tone, even in technical passages.

I love playing tunes. I'll hear something on the TV in the next room and play it in various keys with variations or counter melodies. It's a blast! _________________ Craig Mitchell |
