If you like the way the trumpet plays, spring for the bucks and get a professional cleaning. Your tech will tap the valve caps a couple of times with a rawhide mallet and they will come right off. This is not a DIY with ViseGrips. They can also fix you up with new felts and a good valve alignment and sort out any slide issues.

After that, regular DIY cleaning will be enough for a couple of years or so.

Congratulations on a very nice find.

Health to play! That's nice and clean. Mine looked like that until I started gigging it! I had mine chem cleaned and served by Frank Huber who did a wonderful job.

Well worth the service and alignment. I align all my horns here, and have found a few to be quite responsive to correct alignment - the Super amongst them. (and any Conn I've ever owned - ha!)

Best,
Mike

Here is a clip of me playing a 1938 22b. Great horn.

Let me know if the link works. Been a while since I posted a link:)

For that clip above, in the middle of the tune there is a crazy unison line with gne sax, that I had to play on piccolo trumpet. It was too hard for me on Bb

Nice playing Doug. I still have a nice very 12B that I bought from you. When I retire (soon I hope) I'll get to play it more. Very nice trumpet.

Back to the original post, I'm no pro, that's for sure, but I've played many Supers and several 22B and related trumpets. If I was playing in the Buddy Rich Big Band, I would pick the Super of any vintage. For anything else, I think you could use either. Need to play them to see

Try to get a Fullterton Olds Super if you want one that will respond well with a modern mouthpiece, the early LA Olds Supers have a certain taper where you will need to get a mouthpiece shank/taper modified or made to match the shank/taper of the LA Supers.

This comment is incorrect. Perhaps there is some confusion with the LA Olds cornets.

All LA Olds cornets and early Fullerton cornets do require a different shank mouthpiece, but LA Olds trumpets do not have receivers that require a different mouthpiece.

Granted, older trumpets that have seen a lot of use may have receivers that are "wallowed out" and do not allow all mouthpieces to seat well, but in general, I find an LA Super trumpet in good condition to be superior to a Fullerton model and the mouthpiece receiver is not an issue.
