I’ll chime in just because I love talking about Martin Committees. As a fan of MDD and all the cats that played these horns in the 50s and 60s I was on the hunt for one for many years, and when one fell in my lap it was a helluva find. Owned by a woman, now in her 70s, whose mother bought it for her when she was in high school honor band at a local music store (used), it had been in her closet for decades until I bought it. Mine a 56 Deluxe, (large bore) was in excellent condition save the beautiful engraving which someone buffed in to near oblivion. Thanks to a woman in Elkhart who agreed to refresh it for me, it no looks beautiful, even if the original lacquer is gone.

I play 4th chair in a big band and my daily ax is an LA Benge MLP. The Committee is just too cumbersome for the technical playing that comes with charts written by Thad Jones, Maria Schneider, Gordon Goodwin, and the rest, but then I’m an amateur. I use it for small ensemble work, and just for blowing over changes in my studio. It definitely requires a different approach than the Benge, my old Miyashiro, or even my Recording. For me, the Committee is all about aesthetics, and an undefinable vintage feel, like my 1966 Alfa Romeo, or listening to Kenton recordings on vinyl.

You're right about that, tj. When I was coming up, a lot of Jazz musicians spoke more in metaphor than directly. Pres vs. Wynton. You didn't explain everything with great specificity, you "told a story".
