I feel your pain. I think it's worth it to keep feeling it.

If your antenna captured Star Trek with 75% clear picture when it aired, that was a great reception. For sheer entertainment though nothing today on Tv can touch it.

This thread is a great example of why this site is infinitely better without the dear cap’n.

I understand YMMV.

Trumpet Heralder:

Pardon me Captain, can you tell me what time it is?

Captain: Sure. No problem.

First you'll have to have a watch. Make a sketch of what kind of watch you want. Note all of the ideas on a piece of paper.

Then begin with the design of the watch. Sometimes you can start with the watch case, sometimes with the movement, but mostly do it all together. To make the design of a movement is a full time job. It takes several months from the first line to the last drawing of every part. Draw every part before making it. And leave no doubt to the size or how to make the part.

Each part of the watch is calculated, simulated and verified several times. Then when every drawing is ready, begin to produce the watch parts for the first prototype. At this time check out with which machine or tool is the best way to make the part. Often you’ll need to build first the machine or a special tooling to make just one part.

Once the machine is adjusted, make your parts. But it is a big error to make too many parts at one time. Why? It’s very simple, if you see, when you are working on the prototype it often comes to pass that a change must be made to a part so it will function better. If you have X number of parts in stock, well, you may be tempted to leave the functional, but inferior part as is. But if your stock is nearly empty it is much easier to re-begin to make the part. And, this is, once again, a reason why you don’t work with on stock parts; it is too easy to not make it better.

Making from scratch also means to begin just from bars and plates of metal. So when you make, for example, a pinion, you begin with a bar of 4mm “Sandvik 20AP” steel. If you want to make a plate or a bridge, use a disk of brass or German silver. It takes a lot of work to make a perfect part from scratch.

To ensure the precision of every part, use precise machines like a Hauser Jig-borer, 2 Schaublin lathes, a 4-axis CNC-mill and high precision control devices like the Hauser optical comparator. These and many more machines give you the possibility to make all needed parts for your watches, but also complicated parts like beveled gears.

Once the prototype is really OK, you begin to make the real one. And so on.

Oh. What? Oh. It’s 10:42.

OMG… was just lurking this week after a literal decade-long hiatus, and thinking same thing! TH was never low on drama while the cap’n was around 🍿👀😂

And for all the chaff he spewed out, sometimes there was a genuinely interesting, creative, or useful thought… sometimes 😂

I guess we all have our reasons why we come on here, but I certainly don’t come here for the drama. There are places like Reddit that provide drama if I want it.

But I do agree with your last paragraph except I think “sometimes” it too generous.

My biggest issue was that he would spout nonsense that the more naive amongst us, especially those in their early years learning trumpet, didn’t know enough to filter out the good, bad and dangerous opinions.

I am assuming everyone knows Dr Spock was a rather controversial psychologist from the 50's and 60's, right?

I came along a bit late to the dance, but have certainly seen a lot of his (Capt.Kirk's) rants. 4 or 5 years on the forum, nearly a thousand (apparently all rather long) posts per year, and from the last few posts it would appear he just suddenly disappeared. Is there any backstory, did his swan song get expunged, or just suddenly stop?

Any clues?

My guess is that he simply stopped when he saw that most of the regulars were ignoring him.

If memory serves he was banned. Just as in this thread there were those who agreed and those who disagreed with the action.

Just out of curiosity: How can we verify if a TH member was banned? I can still look up Capt.Kirk's profile in the site's search. There is no indication that his account was involuntarily closed or that he was banned. Not that I miss him or anything like that. I wasn't around the day he was banned, and if I was inclined to reply, I think I would have agreed with the decision to ban him.

Incidentally, the most reachable (searchable) post made under his username was 9 years and 11 months ago.

In any case, the site search I made, showed me that my guess was wrong. Other members were responding to Capt.Kirk right up to the end of his existence on the TH, assuming the end was right after that but was deleted by the moderators.
