|
|
Is anyone familiar with Diorio backbores, mainly the X Caliber line? Sizes 1X 2X 3X 4X 5X etc.? What might these be comparable to?
Also the S series? S, S1, S2, etc….
Numbered bacbores?
Any info is appreciated. Thanks! |

When DiOrio purchased Tottle Mouthpieces - around 2000 - his offerings were standard Tottle mouthpieces. He then expanded the line with a heavy weight backbore and cup weight - then custom tops and backbores.
The 1X was a "utility" general purpose backbore - sort of like a Bach 10. The 2 X was tighter - a lead backbore and the 3X tighter yet but on the dark side.
The DiOrio tops and backbores you now see on eBay are one of a kind models - what's left from an estate sale. The tops look like a mix of Tottle models and Warburton inspired models. These are out of production. If you want duplicates of the tops or backbores they would need to be custom made by a mouthpiece maker.
The backbores and tops (unless otherwise stated) have a different thread than Warburtons. |

I have a 2X XCaliber & I'm really enjoying it. Would like to find a 3X.
So many of the backbores have numbers, but no idea how they translate into shape or size. |

Some information on Tottle DiOrio backbores -
XL , OX, OO and N are "extra large"
K, G, P, and O are considered "large" but all have a somewhat different sound and feel. The P was a favorite for some piccolo trumpets.
(The G made a trumpet more "Bachish" while the P had more of a "Benge" feel. Maybe a little like a Warburton 8 and Warburton 8*)
J and B are considered to be "medium large"
1X and 1 are " Medium"
2X is "Medium-small"
2 and 3 are "small"
All stock backbores have a 28 throat and a proprietary thread not compatible with Warburton. I'm pretty sure the backbore threads can be turned down and rethreaded for Warburton.
The 1 and 1X work well with the B and C cups - the 2X works well with the D and E cups. You can also have any stock mouthpiece with a #28 throat cut and threaded for Tottle tops.
After that you are looking at one of a kind backbores and cups that Louis designed. The meaning of those markings have probably been lost with his passing.
Keep you eye on Reverb and TH Marketplace - you might find something in time. |

Thanks for the info, Andy!
I'm finding other backbore series like, S and ST and TX, and wondering how they differ, especially the S series. I'm really enjoying a few of the heavier backbores (0, 1, and 2) and wondering what else could be out there. |
