I came across this ebay listing: https://www.ebay.com/itm/125642849898

It appears to be a Selmer Paris cornet with a Bach 184 bell. I had never heard of a Selmer Paris cornet until I saw that listing.

If it was such a thing, does anyone have any info on a Selmer Paris cornet? I'd love to learn about them.

Ah, I see what's going on. There was a Selmer Paris american style cornet (like this one: https://www.austincustombrass.biz/pre-owned-1939-selmer-paris-cornet-in-raw-brass-with-nickel-silver-pilczuk-leadpipe/) and the ebay one had the bell removed and replaced with a shepherd's crook bell. At least that's what it looks like?

I guess my question now is - was there ever a Selmer Paris shepherd's crook cornet? I've never really seen these referenced. And second question - are any of the Selmer Paris cornets any good?

Henri Selmer is/was a top producer of all kinds of wind instruments including cornets, both long models and shepherd crook models. I never played one of their cornets but my trust in this brand is so great that I can say that I expect the cornets to be excellent players with great sound and also that I don’t believe swapping the original bell for a Bach bell could be an improvement.

Selmer Paris cornets are real gems. They have a beautiful sound and feel so easy to play. I've come across a couple over the years, but never seen one with a shepherds crook.

I have a 1948 Selmer Paris short model cornet, is a medium bore horn , but has removable shank on lead pipe like the old Besson cornets and it was a super tight mpc reciver tha it don't fit any of my vintage or modern mpc's (I have some of them) , luckily I have the stock mpc that is large , deep cup , flat rim short shank and it works nice for me , this cornet has a very unique sound , completely different from my other three cornets that I realy like .
I never made it to upload piccs here but if you want I can se d you some piccs.

Regards

Good to know, thanks everyone! I had no idea, weirdly, considering how much I love my Radial.

@glakara - I would love to see some photos. I'll send you a DM.

They did make cornets in both long and shepherd's crook models. Quite rare compared to the trumpets. I have photos of two K-Modified model cornets with first slide triggers. I have not played any to be able to comment on the sound, but they are sure to be high quality.

I have a 1941 or so Selmer Paris cornet - short and no shepherd's crook. It has a beautiful sound.

In the 1970s I studied with Edward L. Masters, principal cornet soloist with "The President's Own" US Marine Corps band when it was under the direction of Lt. Col. William F. Santelmann. Masters played a Selmer Paris cornet with the standard bell (not a shepherd's crook.) In fact, years earlier he recorded a record album for Selmer titled "Contest Music for Trumpet and Cornet." He always had the Selmer Paris cornet with him for lessons and I never saw him play trumpet.
