I have acquired a very nice Cole Trumpet that can be played in C or Bb with the change of tuning slide. Serial number 71925. It has Cole/Chicago/Elkhart on the bell. I was probably made by one of the many brass companies in Indiana for maybe a store in Chicago. I don't really know. I'm just trying to figure out how old it may be and how much it might be worth.
Any Ideas?
Thanks,
Chris

There either will be extra valve slides or you will need to pull them out when switching from C to Bb.

There is a mouthpipe tuning slide that changes it from C to Bb. Really wondering how old this horn could be.

No horn changes from C to Bb by just changing the main tuning slide. All the other slides need to also be changed or at least adjusted or else the intonation for valved notes will be way off.

A mouthpipe tuning slide? That sounds more like a cornet or flugelhorn than a trumpet. What others have said here about changing or pulling the valve slides is true. French trumpets in particular often used an H-shaped tuning slide insert, plus pulling the 1st and 3rd slides.

Pictures would really help.

Chris,

I have the same instrument, a silver-colored, Cole Trumpet that had a main tuning slide extension to pitch the horn from C to Bb. It seems I have a much older version of it, though, my serial number is 1347. Let me know if you found out any usable information about the horn! (I realize it has been 8 years since your initial post)
