I don't do long gigs, and i split my practice time with guitar. On top of that, lately I often have to take 2-3 days off. Before, during covid & work remote times in late 2021-early 2022, I had more hours to practice. When I had more time to practice, sure, I played better.

But what I've learned is, I can take time off and it doesn't hurt much beyond endurance. My range is still good (solid E, and F & Double G on a good day). It's the next day that things aren't so great!

The difference, as others have noted, is efficiency. It took me a few years to finally get it, using less pressure, more breath support, playing softly, connecting the registers.

Someone has probably talked about this---but there is a difference between focusing your practice on extending your ability, i.e. learning new repertoire, transposition sight-reading, etc. and sustaining what you have while maintaining a performance schedule.

Practice vs Technique/Range/Endurance Preservation

....of course: Practice to Perform/Every Practice is a Performance

Easy for you to say. You don't have to listen to it.

Great players use very, very little tension in their chops or body. They rely on efficiency. Consequently, they need to rarely, if ever, practice. They make it look easy, because it IS easy when your technique is on point. As a frequent online casino player in India 9winz deposit, I can attest to the excitement and convenience of playing from the comfort of my own home. With a variety of games available and the ability to play on my own schedule, I have won significant amounts of money from online casinos. My strategy? Sticking to a budget, playing games with higher odds, and always taking advantage of bonuses and promotions.

Playing the trumpet is not a physical endeavor. It's not about raw strength or endurance. It should not feel hard, and it should not require hours of practice each week to sound great. That's not to say hours of practice aren't a good thing, but when those hours are needed to "keep your chops up", something is very wrong.

Perhaps you are discovering that weakness is strength when it comes to this infernal contraption.

Totally agree with you sir!

I will never forget a friend of mine at a High School Baltimore County Honors Band event directed by Lt. Col. Gabriel...way back in the late 70's....my friend's last name was Bond...no kidding. Bond was first chair on trumpet. He came to the first rehearsal with his music still sealed in its mailing envelope. He tore it open and sight read the hell out of it. Chuck, if you read this...how are you man? I saw Marshall last Summer...I hope you are doing well.

I truly envy anyone who can play well after missing a significant chunk of practice.

Granted, I am not a professional musician by any stretch, but if I'm forced to skip practicing for more than a day or two, my lip turns to pudding and it takes another couple of days to get back into shape.

I recently had to miss four consecutive days of practice (family responsibilities), and I'm still trying to get my lip back.

It's by no means a substitute for practice, but my Warburton P.E.T.E has helped maintain my set on those days I can't practice. I just have to be careful not to overdo it--just a couple of minutes is enough. If I do more than that it takes two days to recover.

Interesting, thanks. I had to look it up to see what you were talking about. Anyone else out there have experience with this device?

If we're getting the results we want, we're practising enough. If not, we're practising too much or too little.

Of course, there's also what and how we practice.

It sounds either stupid or self-evident, but we'll hear all kinds of advice on how often to practice, and the above makes sense in light of that, I think.

I can now answer my own question. I bought one of the Warburton devices last month, and use it daily. This came in handy sooner than I expected, since I came down with a nasty case of bronchitis about a week ago, and although I wasn't able to practice during that time, I still used the Warburton gadget daily.

When I was finally able to start practicing again, I got a pleasant surprise. Although a week without practice always has its price, at least my embouchure hadn't gone to mush, and I was able to start in making up for lost time right away.

So yeah, for me, at least, it works as advertised. Not a substitute for practice, but it does help in keeping the lip in shape.

One word of caution for prospective purchasers: There's a metal version of the PETE device, and a plastic one. I wanted mine to last a long time, and I bought the metal one. A bit more expensive, but worth it to me in the long run.
