In high school I made the move from 7c to 3c because of marching band. If you move to the 3c you may want to try a Bobby Shew Jazz. Same size as 3c with a little more pop. Kelly also makes lexan version that comes in handy in October.

If you typically play a 3C, try the Hammond 5MB, which is what several drum corps use with great results. If you want something slightly larger, look into the 3MB. My high school and college students who march find the Hammond mouthpieces to be excellent for outdoor use, and have been thrilled with the Hammond pieces.

Since I never cared for marching band, my second thought is to play whatever your band director wants. Or alternatively whatever mouthpiece you've been thinking about trying. Coming back to earth Dr. Lilly gave some sound informed advice.

If you’re asking for a mouthpiece size recommendation, that’s like asking us which shoe size is best for you. How are we supposed to know? Just use whatever feels comfortable to you.

If you’re asking for mouthpiece brand recommendations, you’re probably safe with Bach or Yamaha mouthpieces for high school. If you’re in college, then you should have enough experience to find what works best for you. Or ask your trumpet professor.

I used my Bach 37 at the Seneca Falls, NY band pageant in 1978. I dropped the horn and crumpled the bell. I wish I had used a less expensive horn for marching.

Regarding mouthpieces, I used a Bach 5C back in the day. It got the job done, but I would probably use something a bit shallower if I could do it over.

At last another soul mate.

I actually got unceremoniously kicked out of the band director's office when he said,
"We're not having concert band right now. Are you interested in marching band?" and I answered,
"Oh no, not in the least. Just let me know when concert band seson starts".

Wrong answer.
