I don't know enough about the Radial, but I wonder if there was a specific mpc that was designed for it?

The conical shape of the receiver lends itself to being stretched, so that's what I thought had happened to mine, but now, not so sure....

As someone else said in this thread, the 99 is quite efficient for a large bore horn, but when you turn on the taps it can be a monster. I do love it.

Cheers,
Roger

I have 4 Radials, aquired over some years of searching.

Bb no designation 0.463" bore.

C 99 0.468" bore.

D no designation 0,438" bore.

Eb no designation 0.438" bore.

With a period Selmer 4 mouthpiece these are my go to horns when playing trumpet in orchestra.

Regards, Stuart.

I have a Radial and my mouthpiece gapped about the same as my other horns. I think the receiver is fairly long and potentially prone to wearing out.

Hi Stumac,

How are you? I knew there was an Aussie Radial man on the forum, I'd forgotten it was you!

With the Selmer mpc, is it a normal looking shank? Or do you think that it's different, and designed specifically for the Radial receiver?

Cheers,
Roger

Roger,

Sorry, I wasn't clear in my previous post. The Sellotape was to increase the gap and thereby hopefully tighten the slotting. All my mouthpieces fit fine.

For what it it's worth, when my Radial was new it came supplied with a Selmer Paris mouthpiece marked "2" in the case. At the top of the shank there is a second marking of ".3.S." I have never used it but that one fits fine as well!

I expect the receiver does wear, but although it is around 48 years old now my 99 has only actually had four years of use thus far - two when I first got it and two more recently because a sax player friend coaxed me into playing it again early during covid.

I've had two 75:s, one 99 (the one in my avatar) and some Selmer mouthpieces from that era. Shilke mouthpieces sat loose in all three trumpets, Bach mouthpieces worked well and especially one that I ordered with extra satin silver plating, meaning that it was slightly thicker.

That is also the case with the Selmer mouthpieces, they have a normal taper, but they're just a little, little bit thicker overall. When using them on other trumpets, they do not reach as far in as a Bach mouthpiece does, its a mm difference.

Thanks for the info - I too have used tape to fiddle with the gap on my 99, but sometimes it was so that the mpc would seat.

I've actually got a couple of mpc I haven't tried in it, I might give them a go and see what happens.

Cheers,
Roger

I’m currently using a Bach 6C on my Radial and it plays great, very even and easy across the registers. I did a rough assessment and it looks like it might fit just right to provide zero gap. So this might support the theory that the Radials play best with no gap.

...an update. I fished out my 99, which I haven't played in some time, oiled her up, and put in my HT3 mouthpiece from the HornTrader.

Bingo! Not only did it seat properly, but nearly all the intonation/pitching quirks were gone... I realised that I hadn't played the Radial since I scored this mpc. and it works much better than my other equipment.

I've fallen in love all over again! (don't you love a happy ending?

Cheers,
Roger
