Curious if anyone else out there has played this, local theater is doing it next month. Had to turn down the full run due to conflicts but I'm subbing for four nights.
Didn't see any posts on this after doing a forum search so I thought I'd add to the collective knowledge here after looking through the book last night. Much thanks to Tim Wendt for this format and for all of his posts on here about theater work!
Instruments: Bb and Flugel
Range: Numerous Cs, Ds, and Ebs, 1 F, and 2 F#s
Mutes: Just st. mute, no others, which surprised me given the cartoon nature of the music. Most of the sound-effect type of stuff is covered in the keyboards and an on-stage percussionist doing foley sound effects.
Notes: Some quick flugel-trumpet switches. One crazy quick mute change, st mute to open in 1.5 beats with quarter=167. Mostly pop/rock playing style but a few orchestral-style passages. Some very fast cut-time licks in #9 and bows/exit music that bear some shedding. 6 bars of improv with changes in the exit music. Score is reasonably notated with instrument and lyric cues which is very helpful.
There's a YouTube post of the full show that is helpful for rehearsal purposes. I think there was also a TV broadcast of the show that's available on Paramount+ and Amazon which probably has better audio than the YouTube post but requires a subscription or purchase. _________________ Jonathan Karnes
