Getzen Eterna Large Bore 1988

Hello,
I have possibility of buying the Getzen Eterna Large Bore with serial number SK47xxx which dates it to 1988.

The engraving on the bell says Eterna BY GETZEN U.S.A., above the serial number there are L and B letters.

Can somebody please tell me if it's Eterna 900 Severinsen model or any other? I'm really confused about all this 700s, Eterna II, SP and other variations.

What can you say about the possible quality of the horn taking into the account the year it was built?

What to look for?

From what I gathered I believe it should have nickel plated leadpipe on the inside?

Is 900USD a fair price?

I have a 3-4 hour drive to play test the horn...

P.S. Some background. I currently play on 1979 3x Benge that has red rot problem, a bit leaky valves and needs rotational PVA. I'm extremely happy with the sound I get on it with Currry 60M but I'm looking to improve intonation, ease of high register and better cutting when playing with the guitars.

I'm no Getzen expert but AFAIK the Severinsen models actually say "SEVERINSEN" on the bell. the L B simply means large bore, I think.

If it was made in 1988 it was a few years sfter Doc left Getzen. The original Severinsen was a medium large bore though a large bore option was available. Contact Brett Getzen or Mary Rima at the Getzen factory for more info. Brett posts here occasionally, though I understand they're very busy with back orders right now.

The Eterna Severinsen LB on earlier models was a 0.468" bore. My example has a serial # about SK 19000. The L B letters are divided around the 2nd valve leadpipe brace. Shortly after this, the LB closely spaced below that brace and the bore is 0.462", like the Strad LB, which achieved the large bore simply by using thinner, lighter gauge tubing with the same OD.

I have examined a couple of 80's Eterna LB horns and they were 0.462". About the time Doc moved from Getzen, the Eterna leadpipe was changed to solid nickel (not plated nickel.)

I am no pro, neither player nor repairman, but I believe the brass leadpipe was key to the difference in the play. I have dealt with red rot in Severinsen Eternas, but still prefer the brass pipe, which was identical to the one used for the 700 Eterna in the 80's (Mary Rima told me that for a repair back then). All the ML's and LB Severinsen used the same pipe.

Just my observations from 50 years of Getzen obsession. YMMV.

I saw the horn but haven't bought it.
