Hi folks, I'm hoping someone out there has some info on this trumpet I stumbled across. Numerous Google searches have left me with little insight, so here I am!

Here are the facts:
B-flat trumpet
65xx stamped on the top of the second valve casing

Bell stamp/engraving:
Lockie Music Exchange
Los Angeles CA
USA

Above the text there is a rhombus/diamond shape that looks like it might've once had three or so large letters, but I can't make out what they were.

Any ideas?? I've heard that Lockie Music was a store in LA back in the 1970's, and that it once had a connection with Benge. Then perhaps with Olds?

Basically I'm trying to figure out if this is worth spending a Benjamin on. Overall it's in pretty good condition, and I think with a little TLC it could be a great looking & working horn.

Thanks!

My guess is it's a stencil horn; made by company 'x' and branded with 'y'. In this case, y = Lockie. The search I just made showed L.M.E. was in business from the 1920's or 30's until when ever they closed their doors.

Many of the stencil horns sold in the U.S. back in the day were made in Europe and dating the horn is very difficult.

A few pictures of the horn MAY help identify the manufacturer, or at least eliminate some.

NYCTRPT,
Would it be possible for you to post a picture of one of the pistons? Specifically, I'm looking to see if the word WIDE is stamped on the spring barrel.

I'm working on identifying the manufacturer of at least that part. According to a colleague with whom I'm exchanging info, Lockie had some connection with Calicchio in his early days in LA. Both shops were buying (we think) valve sections from another manufacturer in the Midwest.
Thanks,
-Lionel

In Joe Lill's Benge History, page 125, he states, "Donald [Benge} sold the business to Leisure Time Industries on December 30, 1970....The business was moved from Burbank Boulevard to Lockie Music in Los Angeles, as Lockie was also owned by Leisure Time Industries."

So there may be a connection to Benge.

Maybe not...

The Wikipedia article on Eldon Benge says the same thing.

It's possible it might be an Olds stencil, given where Lockie was located. The parts, especially the valve block, remind me of Olds. The pinky ring is the same as on my Olds Standard from the early 1940s.

Balusters look like Olds.

A photo of a piston showing the spring barrel and valve guide could be quite revealing as to the maker.

That's because the Wikipedia article is also quoting Joe Lill

I realize it's an old post, but I'm curious if you bought the trumpet and still have it?

You might not get an answer as NYCTrpt’s last post was in 2014.

I tried to find that but was unable. The username isn't clickable. How were you able to find it?

On a different note (no pun intended), if someone has a Lockie or Lyle trumpet they're interested in selling, please let me know.
