|
|
I'm a first-time would-be flugelhorn owner so am looking for recommendations. I can't afford the top notch instruments but have found a couple of starters that are possibilities...
John packer 275
Bach fh501
Jupiter 846
Or a 1970s/80s getzen eterna (pre-trigger)
Would appreciate your thoughts! |

I would add the current Eastman flugelhorn to your list. Several of my local schools have them, and they play really well. Getzen is good also. I would pass on the Bach FH501 - it just has a cheapness about it. Can't comment on the others. _________________ Richard Hastings

I believe the Jupiter is a copy of the Yamaha 631. If you can find one for a reasonable price, it’s an OK horn. However, if you can afford it I think any of the Yamaha models used would be a very good choice.

All the flugelhorn may suit your needs. Are you buying from a local music store or online? If possible try it before you buy it. With an online store check their return policy, shipping and restocking fee.
ACB, Getzen , Josh Landress, and The Mighty Quinn have excellent customer service and return policies. Look at their respective websites and call and ask for recommendations for a flugelhorn. All these companies have musicians working there.
Have you considered a B stock (slightly damaged ) flugelhorn? _________________ Schiller shepherds crook

I steer people to Trent Austin and his Austin Custom Brass Doubler's flugel.
https://www.austincustombrass.biz/acb-doublers-flugelhorn-our-1-selling-product-at-acb/
For people like me who only need a flugel a few times a year for church, big band, musical pit, etc, it MORE than fills the need. _________________ 1987 Bach Strad 37

ACB and Dillon both have reputable horns that they stand behind. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

To be clear I think all the Yamaha flugles are fine. I even like the 2310 student model, the one with the horizontal slides. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

I've had and used a Jupiter 846S for 30yrs now. Played it last night and still love the sound and response. Sweetest one I ever sampled was a Courtois 154. The tubing running through the valve block is perfectly straight. Very even blow but much more than the Jupiter I bought. _________________ Dave

Yamahas are a solid choice when it comes to flugelhorns. There are so many great models to choose from, and they’re well-known for their quality and reliability.
The Yamaha 631G is a fantastic flugelhorn with its rich, warm tone and smooth playability—it’s a favorite among players of all levels. The Yamaha 731 is another excellent option, offering versatility and a great balance of tone and response. Even the Yamaha YFH-2310 (their student model) plays remarkably well for its price point and is worth considering if you're on a budget.
If you’re leaning toward Yamaha, you’re unlikely to go wrong. Their craftsmanship and consistency really shine in the flugelhorn lineup! _________________ Mr. Jones

The Yamaha 631 flugelhorn is very difficult to find second-hand for less than 1,200 euros. I have seen the 2310 between 500 and 700 euros. _________________ Notice!!! Amateur musician without formal studies

My first flugelhorn was a Yamaha 231S (the predecessor of the 2310). Played it for about 25 years before I bought the K&H in the sig. While I did like the playability and the sound, intonation was really (!) squirrelly. Not sure this is the case with the 2310, but might be a point to check. _________________ 2019 Martin Schmidt eXcellence

Completely agree and endorse ACB. Good horn for the money and limited use.

I bought the Dillon Rose Brass flugelhorn and also the brushed Phosphor Copper version on eBay.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/186450690640
The two horns appear to be from the same manufacturer. Different valve caps and finger buttons, and that's about it.
Intonation is great on these horns, also the slotting. They are fairly heavy horns, which may (or may not) explain why the notes lock in so well.
I did swap out the valve springs for Yamaha springs, which have a lighter action. |

A (used) Yamaha 631 would be my recommendation as well. Good luck! |
