Hi all,

I’m currently looking at a new horn, I’m mainly a cornet player but played trumpet from Grades 1 - 8 when I was in school 15 years ago.

Currently I am without a trumpet and have been asked to join a big band in September as well as having the opportunity to play at work more (I work in a school with a large music department).

I’ve been looking into various instruments and have had a go on quite a few different instruments belonging to friends. I’ve got myself set on a Schagerl Academia, I’ve tried a 620L which played really well and can currently be picked up for half the price of a JM1 which would be the one in the line-up which “makes the most sense” for me and the type of playing I’m going to do.

Unfortunately there are no stores near by who stock a JM1 and would have to order it online. Does anyone have any experience of these instrument and offer some wisdom, they’re both the Academia line, is the JM1 worth double what a 620L is?

Thanks for all your input!

Have you checked Thomann Music?

https://www.thomannmusic.com/schagerl_tr_620l_bb_trumpet_set.htm

JM1 = $1268-1555 (USD)
620L = $838 (USD)

I have, and it is probably where I would be getting one from. The UK pricing is currently £649 for the 620L and £1199 for the JM1. From what I can see they are very similar instruments apart from the reverse lead pipe. I was wondering if that is really worth almost double the pricing.

I have not played these horns, but I would think that usually there's a solid reason for a price difference between varying "levels" of instruments (Beginner, Intermediate, Pro) from a manufacturer (sourcing of materials, valve blocks, care in assembly?).

Yeah I assume you are right, everything I can find online though points to them being apart of the same “academia” line and using the same carolbrass valve block. Even come in the same case.

I can’t tell if the 620L is just very well priced as the JM1 seems to be in line with the pricing of a similarly specced Carolbrass 5000 trumpet.

I have a few students of mine and at my school playing the Morrison Schagerl models.

If you want a very bright, tinny sounding instrument, then go for it. If you want some more core to your sound, you’ll need to look elsewhere.

Their earlier horns, made in Austria were pretty good, but not so now, sadly.

I have tried the 620L from my student.
I'm clearly positive impressed about the trumpet.
Great core, great balance, overall great playability.
Definitely worth the money.
