|
|
I thought I'd post this just to toss it up and see if anyone else has experienced this.
I had a classic rock band gig yesterday afternoon, and this one was a bit of an outlier due to the heat and humidity - outdoor gig, 90ish degrees and high humidity. We were under a covering on the back patio of this establishment and at one point it the weather was threatening to rain, so we closed the soft sides behind the band, which eliminated most of the breeze that we had been getting.
In short, it was a sweat box, and not very pleasant, which is on top of playing roughly 40 tunes over the course of 4 sets. It's a blow.
I drank a lot of fluids over the course of the 4-hour gig - two 20 oz bottles of Gatorade, three 16 oz bottles of water - and I'm still not sure if it was enough.
After the gig was over and I was driving home, my back teeth on both sides just ached. I have never had that happen before, even after a long, tough gig.
I'm not looking for advice - I just though it was curious, and I wondered if anyone else has experienced it. _________________ Patrick Gleason

At your age I’m assuming your wisdom teeth have been pulled?

My wisdom teeth were all pulled one Friday afternoon on November 18th, 1988 during my senior year of high school - they have been gone for nearly 37 years. _________________ Patrick Gleason

I had mine done when I hit 40, I was an MUC at the Atlantic Fleet Band in Norfolk, Va. Rxcept for the wisdom teeth, TMJ comes to mind. You might want to give Doug Elliott a shout.

If I'm doing a lot of hard, high playing, my tongue can end up pressed pretty hard into my back teeth, leaving them a bit sore.
Or it's the massive amount of sugar causing your teeth to sprout fur. |

Any chance it's jaw pain masquerading as tooth pain? _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

It was definitely tooth pain. As a longtime sufferer of mild TMJ, I know what that feels like. It didn't last long - it was only minorly uncomfortable for about 15 minutes, maybe less.
As for the advice to only drink water rather than the Gatorade, one needs only to do a history lesson of why Gatorade was invented in the first place - it's literally scientifically engineered for the Florida Gators football team towards helping maintain physical performance in a high heat and humidity environment.
Regarding the Gatorade, I've been doing a combination of water and Gatorade for decades and I've never had an issue before, but teeth do change over time, so I'll keep it in mind. I have a 2-hour concert series concert with this same band in a week, so I'm curious if this experience will repeat itself.
JoseLind, thanks for that - it does seem that it might have been caused by something other than a performance drink.
Something else I considered - my teeth all touch, and I had a lot of pressure on my face, so anything putting pressure on my front teeth is going to wind up by default also putting pressure on the rest of them. _________________ Patrick Gleason

When you say your teeth all touch do you mean each other side to side or when you close your teeth there's contact between all teeth from front to back upper and lower?
Is the pain primarily on the upper teeth? I'm wondering about something to do with the sinus tissue aggravated by pressure. I've experienced odd pain that appears in my upper teeth that will migrate, disappear, reappear. My dentist could find nothing wrong, he said it could be because of sinus tissue that's above the upper teeth that could be aggravated by something. Wondering if hard blowing could be that something. |

Not to make you paranoid, but: a few years back I was finishing a shift in a rural hospital, when the nurses handed me an EKG showing a rather large heart attack (Had to come in at the end of the shift).
The patient was an 80 year old or so farmer who came in with TOOTH PAIN. He said it was just like the TOOTH PAIN he's been having recently. It wasn't any particular tooth. But, it was, in fact, a heart attack. The conditions your are describing quite potentially could of percipitated a cardiac event, ether Angina (lack of blood flow but not enough to cause damage) or an MI (same but causing damage).
If there isn't a definite cause of your pain, having a stress test/cardiac echo might be reasonable.
Interesting, the nurse had no idea why she hooked him up to a monitor when he just had some tooth pain, some type of instinct kicked in and quite possibly saved the fellow's life. _________________ -fred

Patrick, sometimes if I am not paying particular attention to things, I find my top and bottom teeth on the left side somehow make hard contact with each other if I am pushing things above the staff, and that does result in some achiness. |

Jazz Fan - my teeth all touch side to side - some of them are tight to the point where it takes a bit to work floss through.
OhioTpt - not likely that it's a heart attack or cardiac event, although I'm sure anything is possible. I've spent most of my adult life doing what I can to take care of myself to the point that I'm 55 with cholesterol that stays manageable without meds and my blood pressure is textbook. I walk 2-3 miles as soon as I get out of bed every morning if the weather doesn't suck, and I've long been a fan of weight training. I also try to eat pretty well and although I do drink, it's not something I do all of the time. Most people think I'm younger than I am. Although I'm carrying a bit more weight than I'd like, no one would look at me and call me fat. In fact, most people guess low when they try to guess my weight because I'm 6'1" and carrying a fair bit of muscle from years of working out - muscle weighs more.
In any case, I don't think it's heart related.
Croquethed - I'm not sure what happened. I haven't had a gig since that night to test the theory though - last one I was supposed to play got rained out.
I'll update this thread after the next gig. _________________ Patrick Gleason

Gatorade does have a lot of sugar. I like it too.
But;
There are much better ways to replenish lost electrolytes.
Nuun, Liquid IV, LMNT are a few examples. |

I joined the forum just to answer this because of the serious nature.
I was a gym rat and thought I was invincible. I once experienced pain in the back molars at night while driving home driving home from a gig. I didn't think anything of it. A week later, I experienced a heart attack.
When your body gives you warning signs, you have to heed them. Although you may think it's not heart-related, it doesn't hurt to see a cardiologist to confirm your thoughts. When the heart is involved, the stakes are to high to go according to what you may think or don't think. I wish you the best. |
