NYCTPT,

Thanks for the input on Charles Daval. There are very few references for Charles Daval on the Internet. The only one that I found simply mentioned he played with the Montreal and Seattle symphonies ( http://metroyouthsymphony.org/moremysa.shtml ). Any other references would be helpful

No, I think Blee played principal for about 19 years, then he moved down to second for a few years, then down to fourth. Great man, great excerpt coach - I learned most of what I know about orchestral playing from him. I think you will find that Mark Ridenaur has a similar opinion...

I believe Marie was acting principal for a year between Blee and Collins.

Daval also played third/associate in Boston (principal pops) for a while, and third in Cincinnati for a few years between Boston and Montreal

MrClean,

Thanks for the confirmation about Eugene Blee. I have updated our list. The last 80 seasons of service covered by 5 players is amazing! And 3 of those 5 covered 78 seasons. I think this is the shortest list that we have so far for this many years of tenure!

Wilmer,

I was at the library this weekend returning some books with my little boys. I decided to see if there were any good books with historical symphony information, and I checked out a copy of Toscanini, the NBC Years. I know that you had mentioned Murray Karpilovsky should be added to the NBC list, but I couldn’t find a reference to him anywhere. I’m wondering if he was with NBC after Toscanini left when the ensemble became the Symphony of the Air. Or possibly he was on staff at NBC after Toscanani?

I think that this list is as complete as it can be based on my present resources (still need some start and end dates for a handful of players). Because of this, I’m going to move this one to its final folder at this point. As this is a work in progress, maybe Symphony of the Air should be added!

NBC Symphony Orchestra
Trumpet Players

Start-End________Name

1942-1954_________Harry Glantz (1st Trumpet)
194?-1954_________Frank Falcone (2nd Trumept)
1946-1954_________Raymond Crisara (Associate 1st / 3rd)
194?-194?_________David Glickstein
1937-1940_________Bernard Baker (1st Trumpet)
1937-194?_________Sol Klass
1937-194?_________Humbert Pennino
1937-194?_________Frank Venezia

The dates and positions that I gathered for these players was from the March 2000 ITG Journal article entitled “Ray Crisara: Teaching by Example” by Keith Winking, page 36. This can be found on line at: http://www.trumpetguild.org/pdf/2000journal/0003wink.pdf and has some really great pictures!

This is a snapshot of the information to date in this folder for me to keep track of the different phases of completion for each of the orchestras shown on this list. Basically this lets me know where the most complete information for each orchestra can be found (page number) so I don’t have to scroll through every page looking for information.

To date 11 orchestra rosters have been completed and moved to their final folders. 1 orchestra has not been started yet, and the balance is in various stages of completion.

Andrew Tomlinson found some good information for our Saint Louis list. Does anyone know anything about Joseph Gustat. From the brief stories that I have read, he sounds like he was a very influential player / teacher!

Wilmer,

Thanks again! Whenever you find out more information let me know and I will update the list. If dates are hard to come by, I think we have done a good job showing the main players in the section. It will be interesting to find out when Murray Karpilovsky was with the ensemble though!

Thanks,

Captain Canuck,

I ran across the reference to Fred Mills playing with the National Arts Centre Orchestra in an ITG Journal article, so I thought I would put this list in our format with the information that you provided earlier. The 1972 end date for Fred Mills is confirmed in the article. The Karen Donnelly information is found in her bio at the National Arts Centre Orchestra web site.

Incorrect RPO Information.

Currently there is no Principal with the RPO, and Brian Thompson (CO-Principal)is covering the majority whilst other players are trialing for this position. David Carstairs is the Sub Principal. They do however all swap around so all current players play first a lot also. But officially the Principal postion is trialing process.

I received the following information from Richard Wandel at the New York Philharmonic Archives concerning our list for the timeframe from 1973 to 1988. It’s good to have this information confirmed. I will follow-up with him and see if he has information to clarify personnel and dates for principal trumpet prior to 1928 with the two orchestras that merged to form the NY Philharmonic.

Quote:

From the 1973-74 season through the 1976-77 season John ware and Gerard Schwarz were co-principals. In 1977-78 it was John Ware and Louis Ranger as acting co-principal. 1978-79 began John Ware and Phil Smith as co-principals. In 1988-89 John Ware left mid season leaving Phil
Smith alone as Principal.

What do you want to know about the merger in 1928?

6pk,

Thanks for the information on the RPO. I will update our list shortly and show Brian Thomson as the Co-Principal. Their web site is not very clear! Also you show the spelling of his last name as "Thompson" but the web site shows "Thomson". Do you know which is correct?

Thanks again!

I ran into this complete list on the Internet, so I'm including it with our lists. Unless anyone sees any errors (I found one with the David Kuehn dates cross checking with an ITG Journal article), I will leave this in the "working" folder for a week for comments, and then move it to its final folder.

Thanks for the input. I have shown Robert Sulivan as (On leave - to The Cleveland Orchestra). Do you know if there was anyone filling in for him, or were they just playing with three for the seaon?

Current roster for the 2003-2004 Season:
Phil Smith – Principal Trumpet
Robert Sullivan – Associate Principal (On leave - to The Cleveland Orchestra)
Thomas V. Smith
Vincent Penzarella

The NYP has been playing with three this season and hiring substitutes as needed.

The NYP web site incorrectly reads:

Philip Smith - Principal
Robert Sullivan - Associate Principal
Thomas V. Smith
Vincent Penzarella

This does not make sense as Thomas Smith (4th trumpet) is listed above Vincent Penzarella (second trumpet).

The NYP programs correctly list it:

Philip Smith - Principal
Robert Sullivan - Associate Principal (on leave)
Thomas V. Smith - Acting Associate Principal
Vincent Penzarella

As has been discussed at TH, the NYP is presently holding auditions for the Associate Principal position.
