Hey people - I'm wanting to get my trumpet re-silvered, but I'm nervous about sending it off. I found a place in TN that had done them for 35 years etc. etc. http://www.musical-instrument-repair-shop.com. Anybody have any suggestions? I really want a "pretty" horn. I don't like raw brass and my silver is coming off. I have a Bach (70's) model 37.

Just know that anytime you get a horn replated (they have to remove the old finish which therefore removes some metal) that the horn may sound different as well. I had the chance to ask Bob Malone about this and this is usually the number 1 thing people overlook. If you are just going for the look of the horn that's one thing but getting the most attractive finish will not always ensure the most atractive sound.

I'm in the same boat with my C trumpet which is quite worn...but if it's a matter of saving the horn then you gotta do what ya gotta do.

The prices seem very good. $400.00 + is better than my home town music store who sends the instrument off and charges $700.00 +.

In the event that you ALSO need to have the valves refitted, you might consider Anderson Plating Company in Elkhart, Indiana. I have had 3-4 instruments with valve problems over the years, and they REALLY do the work well.

The valve work was about $55.00 per valve...may be different now.

Sincerely,

If I am not mistaken Mr.Kay subcontracts his plating work to Anderson Plating in Indiana. Every repair shop I have ever used has done the same thing. Mr. Kay does excellent work. I had him tune up a Schilke B5 (my current main horn) and have it replated. It looked every bit as good as a new Schilke when he was done with it and at a very fair price and quick leadtime.
