What, in your opinion, are the best trumpet texts available? I'm doing some research and wanted to get some input from other players.

Cheers,
kjb

As far as texts on trumpet technique, the best ones for me have been:

1) David Hickman's 5-part "Trumpet Lessons"

2) David Bilger's notes on Trumpet Technique (a concise outline)

3) On certain topics, Roy Poper's guide to Stamp

They are all articulately written.

Dear Sean007

Better late than never!

"The Trumpeter's Handbook" (A Comprehensive Guide to Playing and Teaching the Trumpet) published by Accura Music Athens Ohio 45701 in 1979 Hardback cover 147pages.

Roger Sherman was and still may be a trumpet player in the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

There are 32 chapters and this book covers just about everything except Jazz, and is well illustrated with black and white pictures.

Chapter:
1. Handling the Trumpet
2. Hand Position and Playing Position
3. Breathing
4. The Embouchure
5. Tone Production
6. Articulation
7. Legato Playing
8. The Mouthpiece
9. Instrument Variables
10. Trumpet/Cornet Differences
11. The Flugelhorn
12. The C Trumpet
13. The Higher-Key Trumpets
14. Scales and Arpeggios
15. Vibrato
16. Transposition
17. Multiple Tonguing
18. Intonation Adjustments
19. How to Practice
20. Solo and Audition Preparation and Performance
21. Concert Deportment in Ensembles
22. Selecting the Appropriate Instrument
23. The Professional Attitude
24. Developing Musical Style
25. Mutes
26. Contemporary Techniques
27. Fundamental Repair
28. Selected Literature
29. Trumpet Ensembles
30. Instruments of Historical Interest
31. The International Trumpet Guild
32. Annotated Bibliography

Some of the chapters are very short e.g. Chapter 29 Trumpet Ensembles page 137 only. Some others are about 5-7 pages.

Overall, the book is very good especially for anyone with aspirations to Orchestral work.

It would be nice if the Annotated Bibliography could be updated.

If you want anymore info you can always e-mail me.

Andrew Tomlinson
