ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!

I'm a WI native, actually in Oshkosh about 20min away from appleton, My Brother attends Lawrence, and I have numerous other friends who I've played with before attending there, a marvelous conservatory, and I believe last year Dr. Sturm came and conducted a performance, I've also played his Riverdance. and had the privelege to have him work on it with us

I mean I know that they pull in some big name guys, Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove, Mycoy Tyner, Dave Holland, Antonio Hart, Robin Eubanks, Micheal Brecker, Jeff "tain" watts, Marcus Robinson just to name a few I've seen in the past 3 years. But pulling Fred from Eastman, WOW that blows my mind, I'm not even sure if my Bro knows about that yet. even though he's Bari in the top band....

Being in Oshkosh though ALL of my Highschool teaching has been from graduates of Lawrence, and our concert band program is one of the best if not the best in the state. however we're losing a LOT of talent this year, do to graduation, good thing I'm outta there.

Well, like I said, that is where Fred graduated from. I actually have a friend that is leaving their jazz program there next year, even though he knew Fred was coming. He has his reasons. Anyway, Fred is a great guy. I only met him once, and it was one of those"I didn't even know who he was until afterward" situations, but in hindsight he was nice to me.

Actually Mr. Sturm was the director of the jazz program at Lawrence before he moved to Eastman about 10 years ago. His bands at Lawrence in the late 80s were incredible.

What's the story here? Why is he leaving Eastman?

well, from my understanding of things Ken Schaphorst, the former director left to pursue other career interests, primarily in performance, considering he's already an accomplished composer/arranger/performer. I just recently found out from my director who graduated from lawrence last year, that this entire deal was organized well over a year ago, before Schaphorst left but was just openly announced in early january

I am not saying this is impossible. However, if this rumor was true it would be THE biggest story in jazz education this year. In my network of jazz educators (which is pretty vast) I have not heard this rumor at all. the only place I have seen this is here on TH.

FWIW

Believe it PH, I've heard it now from my Bro who's a student there, My new Director, who just graduated last year from lawrence, and my classical director, who's also an alumni

Yeah, it is true. Absolutely for sure. My source is a friend that goes to Lawrence who talked to Fred Levy about ten minutes after they found out, and my teacher here at my college.

I know that Mr. Levy is retiring at the end of this school year. John Daniel has been named the new trumpet professor starting this fall.

So can anyone confirm or deny the Fred Sturm rumor?

Ooops! Yes, of course I meant Bob Levy. All these names spinning around in my head! Yes, Levy is retiring as trumpet teacher, although I think he is sticking around the school in a more limited capacity for at least another year. Fred leaving was a shock to me as well. When someone told me that my jaw hit the floor and bounced out about ten feet.

I can 100% confirm Fred Sturm will be in Appleton next year, I didn't know about Bob Levy though, I probably should have considering I see him almost every tuesday... his big band plays at this pizza place and me and a few guys jet up there.

hey, you can't beat free music and pizza....

There is an ad in the latest issue of "instrumentalist" that says he going. So it must be true.

As a question to a post above, are you refering to the John Daniel who is a trumpet prof at Penn State as the one taking over the job?

That is correct. Sturm is leaving Eastman for Lawrence and John Daniel is coming to Lawrence from Penn State.
