So are you saying to hold back sometimes, so you don't embarass or blow them off the stage? I mean I know that shouldn't be reason to strive for a great performance, but if it happens it happens. Just curious

I think more what he was going for was that one shouldn't INTENTIONALLY try to upstage anyone, 'cause that's not the point of playing. If you are that much better that every one else, and you want to be recognized, then the audience will already KNOW by the way you play, both in communication skills with those you play with and by your playing ability!
Music is for striving as good as you can be, and if someone isn't as good as you, then it's not THEIR fault, if they're still working at it!
