I've always like "So Many People" and "Handbags and Gladrags" because of the way that he just wails at the end. He's like the Energizer Bunny, he just keeps going and going and going.....

Cronus.......The opening is just unreal,.....one of my practice goals.
Hades.........great groove, and I think some of Chase's most powerful playing.
Then another he did when he was with Woody's band, I think the name was Camel walk blues? I only heard it a few times,if anyone knows the correct name and album please let me know!!

................Long tones work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love a lot of them, but Get it On and Open up Wide are awesome. The double Ab at the end of Open up Wide is amazing.

Open Up Wide. Loved the album cut, of course, but what really made a lasting impression was Bill's playing of this number before a totally unsuspecting audience on the Tonight Show. Johnny Carson was visibly blown away! The audience had to gasp for air before screaming its adulation. I was very lucky to have tuned in.

What did bill's solo contain, was it much different from the album cut? Does anyone have or know where to get a recording of that performance?

I had no idea that Bill Chase played on that album. No wonder those are two of my favorite Maynard tunes.

Now I'll really have to go back and listen to see if I can pick him out.

I have several favorite Chase tunes. I like on side two of their first album "Invitation to a River" with "Boys and Girls together". Of course Woman of the Dark and Get on are also favorites.

A couple things about the group Chase. When the accident happened they were working to try and regain some of their popularity. The second Album was not near the success as the first one. So, they had high hopes for the third album. Additionally, Bill Chase was fired from the Ferguson band because he had trouble holding up the lead part. I think this is before he started playing the 6A4a Schilke mp.

Fired for not being able to hold up the lead part???? I find that hard, if not impossible to believe. I think it would be assinine to think that the thing that gave Bill his sound, unbelieveable high chops and amazing stamina was a Shilke 6a4a mouthpiece.

Which accident were you talking about? The one that killed pretty much everyone, except Bill, or the one that killed Bill?

I love that whole freaky "Chase" story, starting with Open up Wide, the first track on the first record, then Close up Tight the last track on Pure Music. Weird......

Chase was fired from maynards band, cause he couldn't hold up the lead part,it didn't have to do with his range though. I think there were alot of contributing factors though such as him being unreliable as a member of the band, some personality clashes and him using, but it happened.

Jerry Tyree, who played the jazz trumpet chair in Maynard's late 50's band, was once interviewed on the subject of Chase being fired. As Jerry tells it, Chase could not finish a gig before his endurance and chops would fail, as he had not yet fully developed as a powerhouse player. Jerry went to Maynard and complained that it was not his "job description" to hold Bill up every night. Maynard, of course, was well aware of the situation and told Bill to get a smaller mouthpiece. Bill would not part with the large piece he was using at the time, so Maynard let him go. Bill would go on to stardom, and as I understand it, Maynard would later have praise for him, always happy to see an alumnus succeed.

That's an interesting note about Chase and Maynard...never knew that!

Anyway, my favorite Chase tune(s) are:

Open Up Wide, Hello Groceries (mainly for the vocals) Paint it Sad and Woman of the Dark.

Good topic!

Neat thread.

My favorite is "Close up tight." The building trumpet solo is intense.

There is a strong possibility that Jeff Heglesen is going to transribe it and post it free on his website. Problem is, it's in 6/8 and ends on an A!

I heard Bill got fired from Maynard's band because he kept blacking out and falling off the back of the bandstand.

Maynard got tired of turning around and his lead trumpet not being there. Urban legend I guess.

I've been asked to play lead on "Get it on" for a CD being recorded soon. I haven't played that tune since '75!

mm
