At some point early in his career, Vince Penzerella (just retired 2nd in NYP) played prinicpal in Baltimore as well. I have a great recording of him playing Brandenburg 2. What a player and what a teacher! Thanks Vince!

Eric,

Thanks for your message. This is the bio that I have for Vincent Penzarella from the New York Philharmonic web site:

Quote:

Trumpeter Vincent Penzarella joined the New York Philharmonic in 1977, after eight years' membership in the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. He is a native of Philadelphia and a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, where he was a full scholarship student and earned a master's degree in three years. During that period he also performed as a substitute player with the Philadelphia Orchestra, and played with the University of Pennsylvania band and the Temple University orchestra and band. Following graduation he studied with Arnold Jacobs and former New York Philharmonic Co-Principal Trumpeter John Ware. Mr. Penzarella has played principal trumpet with the Baltimore Symphony, the New York City Opera Orchestra and the North Carolina Symphony. He is also a former member of the Brass Arts Quintet. Mr. Penzarella is currently on the faculties of the Mannes College of Music, the Manhattan School of Music, and State University of New York at Purchase.

Based on the dates above, he would have moved to NYC in 1969 which is the year that Don Tison became Principal in Baltimore. I’m wondering (since I received the official player information from the Archives at the Peabody Institute), if he might have played a series of concerts or a portion of a season during that time that Dominick DeGangi was principal, but never showed up on the programs? Clearly, he mentions this in his bio.

Wilmer, does this sound right? What season(s) would he have played in Baltimore?

I think I replaced Vince in the orchestra in 1965.
That bio might be wrong.

I don't remember the exact year, but 1965 sounds about right; Vince told me years ago that he joined the BSO straight out of Curtis, but that he was involved in a horrific car crash some time in the mid-sixties. He apparently spent 1-2 years in a body cast, and couldn't play at all during this time. He started studying with Jake, who had him play the mouthpiece for about a year. He eventually recovered, free-lanced in NYC for awhile, before joining the Met and later the Philharmonic.

I'm going on memory, but this should be fairly accurate.

While I’m thinking about it, if you would have time to give an overview of the Toronto Trumpet Symposium that you shared with James Thompson at the end of the summer, I would love to hear about it. I’m sure others would too!
