Surprisingly, KBOK radio did not show up. They always record all ASU faculty recitals, but I guess they were tied up with a recording of a different concert.....a contemporary (slightly avant guarde) concert in another hall at about the same time. I'm sure the listening public will really dig that.

So, unless someone sneaked in a small recorder, it did not get recorded.

Mr. Hickman,

I also want to say thank you for the invitation to your recital with Sam Pilafian. What a marvelous evening! It was nice to see quite a few familiar faces in the audience, but more importantly, it was great to see how many people showed up! While it wasn’t standing room only, I only saw a handful of seats that were empty. It seems like every PSO concert or Mesa Symphony concert has a large number of unoccupied seats, so this was a very pleasant surprise for me.

The offstage ending to Enesco Legend was a really nice touch. I haven’t heard that piece performed like that before (i.e. Jens used a mute at the ITG conference in Denver this summer). As already mentioned, Sam was a pure treat, and your arrangement of Tico Tico really stole the show!

Please continue to list any “not-to-be-missed” concerts at ASU. I was so glad that I got to hear you perform live!

Take care,

Derek Reaban

P.S. Joel, I left my MD recorder at home! Sorry!

Dave - there's no option for it - you are just going to have to go on tour!
Can I recommend the UK?

Derek:

Thanks. Glad you went. Nice to see you again.

Mike:

I will be performing and doing a session at the Bangkok ITG next June. I'll play the Haydn with the Thailand Philharmonic on an evening concert, and present a clinic/demo the next morning titled "Smart Practice." The subtitle is "Some of the Most Difficult Passages I have Played and How I Learned Them, from Halsey Stevens to Brandenburg."

Will you be there???

Some of us will not be at ITG-2005, but can you at least MiniDisk record your seminar! Convert it to MP3 and post!

I know that ITG will not allow anyone, including the artists, to record any of the concerts or presentations. It has been practice for the ITG to record each program and place recordings in the ITG Archieves located in the music library of Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo.

I don't know, but I would expect this will happen again in Bangkok. I think members can purchase copies of selected concerts or clinics if the artist signed a permission waiver. I'm not 100% up on this policy.

Mr. Hickman,

Will you be publishing your arrangement of Tico, Tico?

I wasn't planning to. It's sort of a sketch more than anything. The piano part was modified quite a bit from the basic version I wrote out. Mainly, the tuba part is incredibly difficult. It was written for Pilafian and goes an octave above what most other tuba players can play. It is also very highly technical for the tuba. (I consider Sam the "Vizzutti of the Tuba!")

Sam and I will be playing several trumpet and tuba (only) pieces that I arranged.....complete overture to "The Marriage of Figaro" with some amusing theater antics, DeFalla's "Fire Dance," etc. If we get a really great pianist, maybe we can add the Tico?

Dave
