Vocal jazz, smart, creative, very interesting, or the senseless butchering of good music? Somewhere in between? Take your pick. |

Some is very bad, some is good. Just depends I guess.

You can't help but notice that no one has said it was good yet. |

The human voice is a terrible instrument to abuse and it seems that vocal jazz people are particularly good at abusing their instrument.
It all sucks!!
And I used to sing in a vocal jazz group in college.
It sucked then and it still does!!!

Why do you have to choose either/or. The problem is, it sometimes is very good, sometimes very bad, but never in between.
I love Diamanda Galas, as an example.

I think jazz vocalist are great. You can't sit there and critisize it because some of it is bad, I mean if that's the case, there are a LOT of bad jazz instrumentalists out there. Like anything else, if it's done well, it's more than likely going to be enjoyable, take the group Take Six for instance, or even the classic Manhattan Transfer. You can't sit and tell me that those two groups are bad, they're incredible, and quite tasteful at that. |
