Did he really use a Bach 10 1/2C? I guess it doesn't matter, but I find that pretty amazing considering how full of a sound Mendez got. Did he exclusively play one, or did he use other mouthpieces?

I own an Olds Mendez signature mouthpiece from the '50's. It has the number 1 stamped on the side, along with Mendez' name in script. It was given to me by one of my students who bought it brand new when she worked for a music store in high school -- I'll never sell it. It feels very similar to an old NY Bach 10-1/2C that I have, so it would not surprise me at all to hear that he played a 10-1/2 at some point in his career.

Yep.
I've seen it in 1958 & 59 while in H.S. in Calif.
Was of special interest to me as I played one with my Conn 22B New York Symphony.
He didn't discourage me from getting a different mouthpiece but thought the 10 1/2C was just fine. It was!!!
Regards,

and if we're talking about the seven up bottle shaped mouthpieces-- the later horns came with a m/p with a 2 stamped on it.

I could not and still can't play it. I played a 7c at the time. '74.

I've got a Mendez 2 that a friend in the Army gave me- he used it in high school for half time shows as he could get a good loud sound out of it. I've seen the specs for both the Mendez 2 and the Mendez 1, and the main difference seems to be the cup size with the 2 having the smaller cup. I've seen some Mendez 2 mouthpieces for sale on ebay from time to time, but I've never seen a Mendez 1 for sale. From what I've heard, they seem to be the more sought after mouthpiece.
