I was in a Civil War reenactment recently, and had trouble finding a lot of bugle music. Does anybody know of a book that has all of the Civil War bugle calls, and a place where i could get such a book? _________________ J.D. White

Go to your nearest Boy Scout office and pick up the music and bugling merit badge book. It'll cost maybe $4 and has about 20 of the most common calls in the back. |

I have an old small yellow book that I found at a music store a while back. Top says-- Bugle
Signals, Calls, & Marches
For Army, Navy, Marine Corps,
Revenue Cutter Service & National Guard
By Captain Daniel J. Canty
originally published in the Feild Musician's Manual
Oliver Ditson Company
Theodore Presser Company
Sole Representative
Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania
I don't know if thats what your after, but it has 210 bugle calls in it and cost $2.25 whenever it was I found it. |

Boy Scouts. Man, that was a hard merit badge to earn. All that by memory. That and morse code. geez.
Anyway, in addition to the two excellent sorces given there is ARMYBANDSONLINE.
Have you been there? Once you get to u.s. army bands look for listening and then bugle calls.
Several are Mp's and twenty or so printed out for free download.
Sorry, I can't get the link just right.
Hope this helps.

My father has a recording (pre CD era) of the Eastman Wind Ensemble under Frederick Fennell reinacting the Civil War band music and calls on period instruments. I do not know if it's available in any form now, but try the online catalogs.
This was the 1860s and things were different then, both the instruments and the music styles. Most of the horns had bells that faced backwards so the recording was done with the mics in the back. They used the full array of brass rotary valve euphoniums and cornet/trumpets from soprano through bass Bb, Eb, F, C etc... good luck, and make it authentic! |

George Rabbai is a CW fanatic and has a book out, though I gave mine away and can't come up with any more details at the moment |
