Shastock was the Cup Mute of that period.
The mute has an adjustible gold colored cup section.

Back then there was a mute which was called, at least sometimes, a 'Robinson' mute. Unlike many of the cup mutes used today, the bowl on the Robinson was very concave on the inside (bell side), whereas many mutes made more recently were/are almost flat or even convex on the bell side. Also, like wiseone said, the cups were adjustable. The different shape to the cup lent a very different sound to the mute. Look in some old 'Metronome' magazines from the '40's, you'll probably find some ads for the Robinson mutes, and Shastock too.

You can get the Shastock for about $37.00 from Dillon Music.

I don't know about the Robinson.
