What is your favorite Standard Time album by Wynton Marsalis? I have just started listening to Vol. 3, The Resolution of Romance. Man, this is a good album! Wynton has a beautifull tone and plays so lyrically that I could listen to it all day. His father is AMAZING on Piano too. My dad was so impresed with Wynton's father that he went out and bought a couple of CDs by him. Both are such outstanding musicians, it blows my mind! Whats your favorite?

Hey.

I'm listening to that album right now!

I like most of them, especially the first one, and Intimacy Calling. Both I find are great, and my favourites are memories of you (no wynton, Piano solo) and Wynton's Bourbon Street Parade at the end of Intimacy Calling.

A slight tangent to Standard Time, but I had to mention his earlier work on Black Codes from the Underground. I feel this to be some of his finest work, still, to date. Not that anyone ever calls any of these tunes, and no, these compositions haven't been placed on a pedestal like some of his more expansive works...but man, well-executed and striking.

Volume 1 is my favorite, but 4, the Monk Album, stands a close second.

I would have to say Vol. 1, followed closely by Vol. 3 (Ballad of the Sad Young Men).

Black Codes is by far his best recording IMHO. Title track his best recorded solo ever...

I'll disagree with that anytime....

I'll take any Miles Davis recording i've ever heard (save You're Under Arrest - I like the 2 pop covers, but that is it on that album...).

Listen to Miles's ballad playing... My Funny Valentine, anything from Porgy and Bess, even Time After Time (especially on Live around the world). For me that is enough....

Personally when it comes to this topic in general, I think that #1 is hands down the best playing....

Volumes 2 and 3 are my favorites. I think 3 is my overall favorite, though.

These ballads are more "ear candy" if you will, nice to listen too but not worth much, like pop radio. Wynton is a great guy an unbelievable trumpet player and a great educator who has done alot for music....but he knows his place and it's not as an innovator. Wynton and Miles shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence together....what have Wyntons standard time albums offered to fowarding the art and adding something new....nothing....it's all been done he's not doing anything new.
Wynton has a nice sound but it is detached from his emotions ....listen to miles play a ballad it's like listening to Sinatra sing one... everything that he's been through is coming out of his bell, you can hear his pain, strength, weakness, insecurity etc...it's erie and breathtaking you don't get that from Wynton. If you don't get Miles you need to listen to more, once you get it theres nothing like it....its not always easy to listen to, but no one ever said great music always was....it makes us think, makes us feel pain, but is beautiful.
I took a improve class with kim richmond a couple of years ago and someone wanted to listen to a Wynton song and kim said "there would be no Wynton in this room, we will only listening to people who innovate not imitate" or something like that

My fav. Standard Time is the first one, good stuff.

I didn't say that he was an inovator, I think he has tastefully put together the best of jaz to apeal to every ear. I also have to make a comment about being detached from his emmotions. On the occasions whenI have talked to wynton mostly backstage at the Bass Performance hall, he has let on a few things. First off he is a very emmotional player and that could be the only thing in his mind when playing. He is a gret musician and we can agree on that good post dwm1129.

I like the monk one the best. Monk totally personifies jazz, and wynton does him justice.
