Folks:
I just finished putting up the last five of a batch of Don Fagerquist
transcriptions I did back in December up on my website:
http://www.shout.net/~jmh/#recent
or
http://www.shout.net/~jmh/fagerquist/transcriptions.htm
With this batch, all but one of the tunes on DF's "Music To Fill A Void" are
transcribed. Hopefully this will prompt some of you to purchase this
excellent CD, which is (IMHO) DF's best work and a great example of the late
1950s tentette arranging style of Marty Paich et. al. (There's a CDNOW link
on the second page mentioned above...)
Acrobat Reader is, as always, required to view/print the transcriptions.
Your feedback and corrections are encouraged.
[Coming pretty soon, a Carl Saunders transcription from "Out of the Blue",
and (uncharacteristically) a Bill Chase solo from "Pure Music".]
Enjoy,
Jeff

Greetings:
A couple of new jazz trumpet solos posted on my website.
* Carl Saunders' solo on "Stella By Starlight", from the Carl Saunders recording "Out Of The Blue"
* Lee Morgan's solo on "Ceora", from the Lee Morgan recording "Cornbread"
They're available at
http://www.shout.net/~jmh/#recent
I also built a Lee Morgan tribute page with some of Lee's solos I've posted before, plus a brief biography and discography. Corrections/suggestions on all of these items would be appreciated!
Regards,
Jeff

Over the past few weeks, thanks in part to postings on this forum, I've acquired a book with 70 transcriptions of Brownie solos and another with 12 or so transcriptions of Louis Armstrong solos from the Hot Five recordings. Pretty interesting to see the differences. Many more notes in Brownie's solos of course, but both have amazing cohesiveness. Both are timeless, precious parts of jazz history and I would never attempt to rate one "better" than the other in any aspect. But seeing the differences in approach on paper is instructive. _________________ John Haysom

I find it very useful to compare solos over the same set of chord changes by different soloists. For example, comparing Brownie's solo on "Split Kick" with Blue Mitchell's on "There Will Never Be Another You".
Comparing Louis and Brownie...hmm. The function of the trumpet is so different between those periods. But, if you get something out of it...
I'm on the verge of an "aha" moment as I'm transcribing a Carl Saunders solo on "Love Dance" from his new "Be Bop Big Band" CD. Man, that guy can PLAY...
