How about this for a format?

I was reading on one of my favorite baseball sites and ran across this. Believe it or not, I don't post on the political forum there...

There was much discussion among the board startup group regarding political topics. Specifically, Do we want to allow political topics at all? After much discussion of the pros and cons, we decided to allow them on a "trial basis".

Political discussions will be watched closely, as they tend to take a negative turn rather quickly and can easily become heated and emotional - that's the nature of the beast.

If you don't have confidence that you can discuss political issues without becoming emotional, confrontational, disrespectful, condescending, etc., I highly recommend that you avoid these discussions. If a political discussion takes a negative turn I will promptly shut down or delete the topic, and depending on the circumstances, issue warnings to those involved. It will not take many of these instances for politcal discussion to become off-limits.

Except that the first time a topic is shut down, the side that feels most agrieved will cry foul, accuse the Mods of bias and start a spate of "affimative action" style posts.

It sounds good, but until people respect the mods' independance it's a pipedream.
