Hi,
I'm a sophomore music major, and have played around a bit with stamp before. My chops are just average, I was just wondering if I should just start out doing the basic warm-up, or if one of the variations would be better to start with. Thanks for any imput.

Adam

I'm probably one of the least qualified people to advise you, but maybe my comments will get the ball rolling, so to speak.

I assume that when you say "basic warmup" routine, you're talking about 3, 4a, 4b, and 5 (as opposed to using 3a, 3b, 3c). That's where I'd start -- you might not even venture beyond #3 until you really get the pedals working right. Then, branching out to 3a and 3b is pretty straightforward.

If you can arrange it find someone who knows the approach to work with you. even if only for a lesson or two. Having my teacher's feedback has been enormously helpful -- I think there's a right (most beneficial/productive) way to do the exercises, especially the pedals and the lip and mouthpiece buzzing work. I've also found Poper's book on Stamp to be quite useful, it's a great investment.

Hope this helps!

Here's the approach to the Stamp exercises I learned from Bert Truax.
