The Philharmonic Society of New York and The New York Symphony

To understand the history of the New York Philharmonic, I have provided background information from an interview on the Internet with bassonist Sol Schoenbach (by William Dietz) detailing the music environment in New York in the 1920s:

At that time (prior to 1928) there were two orchestras in New York, the Philharmonic Society of New York and the New York Symphony. Walter Damrosch, the conductor of the New York Symphony, dominated the entire New York City educational system of music. He had a theory that all string players should be Russian or Polish Jews, that all brass players should be German, and that all woodwind players should be French. His orchestra was made up of these different ethnic groups and he would hire European musicians each year from these various countries to staff openings in his orchestra. Two important wind players who were involved in this European importation were the flutist George Barrere, and Marcel Tabuteau, the famous oboist. Others included the French bassoonists Auguste Mesnard and Louis Letellier. This fine group of wind players became part of' the faculty of the Institute of Musical Art, which was founded by Frank Damrosch, the older brother of Walter Damrosch. The Institute of Musical Arts later merged with the Juilliard School.

With this background, I have worked with Richard Wandel from the New York Philharmonic Archives to develop lists for the Principal Trumpet Players with the New York Symphony and Philharmonic Society of New York prior to 1928. The New York Symphony list shows the date that player started with the ensemble and when they last played with the ensemble. It doesnοΏ½t show when a player left the ensemble between these dates to play with another group. It also doesnοΏ½t show the exact years that the player played principal (there was an asterisk in the lists that indicated the player was in the principal chair for at least one season). This information was provided to the New York Philharmonic Archives, but the Archives do not contain any detailed records for the New York Symphony.

The New York Philharmonic list is similar in format (years of service are shown, and the players on this list had an asterisk by their name indicating they played principal during their tenure). Richard has provided much more detailed records on these players, showing the exact dates for when they played principal trumpet. Christian H. Rodenkirchen for instance was principal in the NY Phil from 1905 οΏ½ 1907 and from 1909 οΏ½ 1911. This information is included following the more general time frames lists for the two orchestras that merged to form the New York Philharmonic

Richard Wandel of the New York Philharmonic Archives graciously provided the following information in support of our project. Thank you Richard!!!!!

Quote:

First Desk and Principal Trumpets of the New York Philharmonic

Note that in the nineteenth century, first desk positions shifted often, at times even from one concert to the next. We do not have the complete original programs for the second and third concerts of the first season. Wolter is listed for Nov 1843 but we are missing the information for the remainder of that season and for the first concert of the 1844-45 season. By the second concert of that season (Jan 1845) Dodworth has the first desk position.

I have modified the format of this list just slightly from our standard format to capture additional information that was provided by Richard. I have also chosen to reverse the order for this list to keep in line with his format (earliest dates shown at the top of the list, later dates shown towards the bottom).

Since detailed information of this type is not available for the New York Symphony, the name of the player and his start and end dates are all that are shown. Overlaps exist, and to arrive at exact dates is not possible, but it is clear from the Philharmonic Society of New York list that these players swapped regularly.

I just listened to the NYPO / Mehta recording of Mahler 5 ...

AMAZING playing!

It was recorded in Sept. 1989 - so early in Phil Smith's career at New York. This recording is definitely one of the best (the best?) recording of this symphony I've heard from a trumpet perspective (fantastic sound, very nice phrasing etc and deadly accurate) - look it up!

Jack.

Jack,

I stumbled across this Review of Mahler 5 Recordings when I was researching the Principal players for the National Symphony Orchestra. Indeed, the New York Mahler 5 under Mehta (a disk that I love myself) received a tremendous review from a player that has listened to more Mahler 5 symphony recordings than I even knew existed. While the NY Phil recording didn’t make it to the “top echelon”, the reviewer comments “…Phil Smith's trumpet playing in the first movement is flawless”, it sounds like it could still be in the top 10 versions ever recorded.

While he is complementary of many recordings, he is quick to balance both ends of the review spectrum (check out his statements in the paragraph before the NY Phil review – OUCH!)

Mahler 5 – Mehta, New York Philharmonic

Thanks for bringing up this recording!

Derek - I've heard the 1st mvt of that Cleveland / Dohnαnyi recording, and I have to agree with this guy! Not to my taste at all. The Bernstein / Vienna is also very beautiful, I suppose as you could expect from Lennie.

Interesting site - he's certainly done his homework!

I agree with the Philadelphia/Levine recording with Frank Kadarabek on principal. The playing is very solid and Levine offers a very accessible interpretation.

I checked the dates of the New York Philharmonic Young Persons Concerts. The first telecast was January 18, 1958 and the last broadcast was in 1972. Depending on the program that you are seeing, there would have been one of two sections playing:

New York Philharmonic
Trumpet Sections

1948-1962 (15 Seasons)
William Vacchiano
Nat Prager
John Ware
Jimmy Smith

1962-1973 (11 Seasons)
William Vacchiano
Carmine Fornarotto
John Ware
James Smith

Hope this helps!

I received a request today wondering who was in the NY Phil trumpet section for the 1979-1980 season. I have a list that I received from the New York Philharmonic Archives listing the dates of tenure for every trumpet and cornet player that has been in the group (since 1842), but it is not broken down by part. The following list is a “best guess” on my part, but clearly there are errors (although I’m certain that the dates are all correct).

Can someone help me with the positioning of the section players? I’m sure there were vacancies as well (I’m guessing where I have the blanks), but if a one-year position was awarded during those vacancies, it would be nice to include a name.

Also, what was going on for the 1976-1977 and 1977-1978 season (5 and 6 players in the section)?

MrClean, Poochie, RubberDuckie....

Thanks!

Well the number of players during that season probably has to do with the fact that they were searching for a new Principal. Mr. Schwarz's conducting career was taking of , Mr. Ranger was filling in (no pun intended) and Mr. Penzerella probably played some as well.

Vince became second trumpet wehn Jimmy Smith retired and Carmine moved down to play 4th or 3rd depending.
