Hey,
Point #1 we know-Marsalis is GOD!.
-Now that that is out of the waylets get to the point. What do you guys think is the best piece to show off your all around ability. The piece that you would play to show everyone that yes I really am a Trumpet God!! Consider carefully each piece and what each would show off (those of us who have the music for the cd have a little more of an advantage on this.) Just a little bit to make you think |

I like the Grand Russian Fantasia best. Out of the book, it has the technicality but also shows off the musical phrasing. _________________ Andrew Fowler

Hi there, I really think the best show off "I am trumpet God" piece would have to be the Arutunian Concerto, it has everything from fast and technical to beutiful lyrical playing, not to mention a killer cadenza. If you want to stick to the Carnaval recordings I suggest Sounds from the Hudson, I believe it's the last piece in the book. |

I love the 2 pieces out of Arbans... Variations on a Tyrolean song(Love the intro), and also Arban's Fantasie Brilliante. The only thing that neither of these pieces shows off is range, but who says you cant play around w/ the last note of the piece and take it up an octave or so?
I think too many people pay attention to Carnival of Venice and skip over all the other awesome pieces in the Arban's book. They all have basically the same theme, but I personally like the Tyrolean song better than the Carnival. I also think it's much harder. Also, while Fantasie Brilliante may not be harder, it's fun and overall cool. I would say it's definently one of my favorite pieces of all time. |

Grand Russian Fantasy is a nice piece and if you can triple tongue it is a fairly easy piece. If you have a very solid G, go for Napoli. |

I would have to agree with the Artunian. It isn't a "flashy" cornet solo only designed to impress your average listener. It takes tremendous endurance and focus to sound good on this piece. If your aim is to impress your trumpet peers, this piece will definitely do just that. (although, you're missing the point if that's all you're after!)

LMAO! Vizzutti is insane. Though I would just LOVE to be able to play that song... Firedance is more attainable but it's still a hard song, though. |

Have you guys ever heard Nakariakov do the Arban's Norma variations, it's INSANE!!!! The guy was only like 16 when he made the recodring I have and is near flawless. That's the only recording I've heard of it but it sure does sound more impressive than the played Carnival stuff, as much as I love the piece, it is a bit played out. Other than Stegers version I've heard a whole lot of recording of the others. |

Take a listen to Al Hirt's Carnival of Venice. That's a really fun version to listen to.

I always liked Napoli myself. How about "Moto Perpetuo", tounged not slurred (i.e. as written), all in one sitting (no splicing in the recording studio), up to tempo, circular breathing and all??!!?? Good luck on that one...
